Ever since Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Manchester United, links to Viktor Gyokeres have been relentless.
This was an almost instantaneous transfer rumour to develop once Ruben Amorim’s path was set toward Old Trafford. But despite the link with Amorim, Manchester United’s rumoured interest in signing Viktor Gyokeres is purely down to his ridiculous goal-scoring record.
Despite Ineos having concerns over Gyokeres’ age, the lethal goal-scoring form is simply too good to ignore and has left much of Europe mulling over the Swede. If United cannot complete the deal, Amorim may have to watch Gyokeres shine for Arsenal or Chelsea, which would be a painful outcome.
Gyokeres is smashing all kinds of records for Sporting CP this season with a whopping 52 goals and 12 assists in 48 games. Despite playing in a league considered weaker, Gyokeres is top of the European Golden Boot rankings right now with 57 points, thanks to the 1.5 coefficient score, leading Mohamed Salah by one.
After the success the pair enjoyed, Amorim is keen to reunite with Gyokeres at United, but has now sent a pretty blunt message to his former striker.

Ruben Amorim breaks silence on chances of Viktor Gyokeres to Manchester United
United’s appointment of Amorim was always going to see Sporting players linked with a move, and Gyokeres is the pick of the bunch, looking like the most likely to get a big move this summer.
It had seemed a deal was off the table, though, with little reported for months until the past week. It emerged that United are still considering Gyokeres; however, the striker is yet to make his decision and is therefore thought to be waiting to see if the Red Devils can secure Champions League football.
Amorim was then asked about this during his press conference for the Athletic Bilbao clash on Thursday, sending a brutal message to Gyokeres who still has four years remaining on his contract, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
“Gyokeres deal? I didn’t talk to him. But if a player only wants to come to Man United to play Champions League, then he won’t come”.
“We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.”
Gyokeres has an £85m release clause, although Sporting are set to entertain offers between £55m and £70m, which is a big chunk of the budget for a player, so Amorim would want to make sure the player is joining for the right reasons.
If not, then United may be better without and looking elsewhere with Amorim’s brutal message saying as much.
Ruben Amorim highlights lack of goals as factor behind struggles
United may be unbeaten in Europe, but domestically things have been very different, with Amorim’s side sitting 14th in the Premier League table. This position is not false, with United having among the worst goal records in the league.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 12 | 34 | 11 | 12 | 11 | 43 | 47 | -4 | 45 | |
| 13 | 34 | 12 | 5 | 17 | 51 | 61 | -10 | 41 | |
| 14 | 34 | 10 | 9 | 15 | 39 | 47 | -8 | 39 | |
| 15 | 34 | 8 | 14 | 12 | 34 | 41 | -7 | 38 | |
| 16 | 34 | 11 | 4 | 19 | 62 | 56 | 6 | 37 |
Goals are clearly a massive problem, and in Amorim’s press conference, as quoted by club media, the search for a striker has been commented on by the head coach. When asked if Gyokeres is the kind of striker he wants, Amorim was cryptic and deflected to claim he is pleased with his current options.
“Our focus is to help our players that we have. Rasmus [Hojlund] scored one goal in the last game. Again, I think you can see that Rasmus has the talent, Josh [Zirkzee] has the talent, Chido [Obi] has the talent.
“We have to improve the players, but to improve the players individually, we have to improve the way that we perform, the way we play.
“We are far from being a really consistent team that can help the strikers to score many goals. We have a clear lack of goals, and that has cost us a lot of points this season. We have to improve that [play] to help the strikers to improve.”
Amorim was never going to admit to wanting Gyokeres, but his words speak volumes. He is fully supporting his team, but knows massive improvements are needed, with a new number nine not the solution to everything.
