Real Madrid now seriously considering signing player Manchester United sold for just £5m last year

Manchester United snapped up a new left wing back in January, overlooking a move to re-sign Alvaro Fernandez in the process.

Ruben Amorim was appointed by Manchester United in November, and brought his 3-4-2-1 approach with him from Sporting.

That meant United shifted to play with wing backs, which didn’t exactly mesh well with the squad at Amorim’s disposal.

Amorim needed to sign a wing back in January and United snapped up Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu from Lecce.

The Dane has shown some potential up United’s left flank but is certainly still adjusting to life in the Premier League.

United chose Dorgu but had other options on the table – including a rather familiar name in Alvaro Fernandez.

Real Madrid now considering Alvaro Fernandez move

Fernandez – who also goes by Alvaro Carreras – joined the United ranks from Real Madrid back in 2020.

The left back dazzled on loan at Preston North End, but didn’t enjoy the same success at Granada.

United sent Fernandez on loan to Benfica in 2024 and the Spaniard showed promise with the Lisbon giants.

Benfica signed Fernandez permanently for just £5million, triggering a purchase option in his loan move.

The 22-year-old has been outstanding this season, racking up four goals and five assists in 47 games for Benfica.

United considered re-signing Fernandez in January to solve the left wing back issues, but he could now end up back at Real Madrid instead.

The Athletic report that Real Madrid are considering signing Fernandez as they look to strengthen at left back.

Ferland Mendy’s recent injury comes just as Real are looking for other options anyway, and Fernandez is admired at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Going from being sold by United for £5million to signing for Real Madrid within a year would be pretty remarkable, and Fernandez would surely jump at the chance to return to the Spanish capital.

United should remain keen on Alvaro Fernandez

One interesting point here is that Fernandez’s €50million (£42.5million) release clause could be a problem for Real.

That value is described as being potentially ‘prohibitive’, with Real not looking to spend quite that much on another left back.

United can re-sign Fernandez for just £17million, an enormous £25million cut from his release clause to every other club.

United should still be looking at Fernandez for two reasons; the first being that he can offer great competition for Dorgu without breaking the bank.

Amorim needs two competent left wing backs and Fernandez’s history of playing in that role at PNE should be appealing.

Alternatively, United could look to re-sign Fernandez and flip him for profit down the line if clubs like Real are interested.

It’s clear that Fernandez’s stock is on the rise less than a year since departing United permanently, and we could see him land a big move in the near future – whether it’s back to Old Trafford or elsewhere.
