‘One they like…’ Man Utd could turn attention to 6’5″ star compared to Haaland, but there’s a catch

After the long-running saga for Bryan Mbeumo’s signature has drawn to a close, nobody will be mistaken and think Man Utd’s transfer window is over.

In fact, it can be argued that the biggest gaping hole in the squad, at the striker position, is still left untouched.

Granted, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo scored a combined 35 Premier League goals last season, but they did so in specific positions, none of which was No. 9.

United in Focus can exclusively report that the club’s focus is now on a striker, and a 6’5″ star compared to Erling Haaland is ‘one they like’.

However, there is one catch.

Leipzig's Slovenian forward #30 Benjamin Sesko celebrates scoring the second goal during the German first division Bundesliga football match between Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig in Frankfurt am Main, western Germany on May 18, 2024

Man Utd’s latest stance on Benjamin Sesko

Benjamin Sesko is not a new name for those who follow Man Utd, since he’s been on the radar even when he was breaking through at Salzburg.

Coincidentally, Vivell rated Sesko highly at the time in his role as the Technical Director of the club, so the links to the Slovenian star made sense.

However, Sesko looked likely to join Arsenal at one point, which would have paved the way for United to have a free run at Viktor Gyokeres.

Now that Arsenal pivoted to Gyokeres instead, the noise around Sesko is growing quickly, especially since his playing style has been compared to Erling Haaland a lot.

Sesko’s physical gifts are second to none, and transfer insider Graeme Bailey told United in Focus that Man Utd have Sesko in their sights.

He said: “Sesko is very much someone who the football department likes. They know the market. Sesko’s people are doing work – they have had contact with a few clubs, United included, but also Newcastle – just letting them know his situation.”

Man Utd see a catch in Sesko deal

While Sesko is undoubtedly a tantalising prospect, Bailey says that there’s a catch in any prospective deal for him, and that’s to do with United’s once bitten, twice shy attitude.

They have already spent nearly £70m on Rasmus Hojlund, who arrived as a young and unproven striker before failing to kick on at Old Trafford.

Now, Sesko is far ahead in terms of experience compared to where Hojlund was, but United are wary of spending huge money on a player who is still more about potential than current ability.

Bailey said: “The one thing I am told with him is the age, we know Amorim wasn’t keen on Delap because of this. Then there is the cost – he is very expensive and they really don’t want another Hojlund situation.

“He is considering staying for another year, similar to how Haaland did.”

This seems like a deal that will happen as long as United can bring the money to the table, but with as many question marks around him as there seem to be, it is more unlikely than not that United will do so.

Perhaps if Sesko keeps up his good form in Germany and United return to the UCL next season, then this can be revisited.
