Manchester United have had three goalkeepers try their hands as number one for the club in the past six months, but Senne Lammens is the only one to impress.
This season, Manchester United started with a goalkeeper who couldn’t claim crosses in Altay Bayindir, before Senne Lammens took authority of the position.
Lammens has been top class since joining United, offering an immediate upgrade on the terrible Andre Onana and Bayindir.
Ruben Amorim is excited about Senne Lammens
Lammens has even drawn Peter Schmeichel comparisons this season, which showcases just how highly fans rate the Belgian.
However, whether Lammens was signed to be first-choice is unclear as Ruben Amorim only started him after Bayindir howlers. So what does his emergence as a true starter mean for 2026 transfer plans?

Manchester United’s goalkeeping plans have been changed by Senne Lammens
Lammens has been among United’s best performers, as the club are unbeaten in his five games in net, however, he can expect new competition in 2026.
How would you rate Manchester United’s season after 11 Premier League games?
Despite Lammens’ success, United in Focus understands, via Graeme Bailey, that the club remains in the market to sign a new goalkeeper in 2026.
However, the club are currently assessing what is needed, having been hugely impressed by Lammens’ adaptation for the Premier League, which could mean a new number two is the decided target instead of a number one.
United believes Lammens could be a long-term solution to the goalkeeper position, and if this is the case, the need for a number one isn’t there, and so the parameters of a signing have changed.
This might not necessarily be a new signing as United in Focus understands that Radek Vitek is an option for the club as the number two goalkeeper to compete with Lammens.
This is a move United are considering, with Vitek impressing at a relatively high level this season, and the club is keeping track of his performances.
Don’t rule Radek Vitek out at Manchester United
While Lammens has been very impressive in his five games in goal for the Red Devils, the idea of Vitek returning from loan and taking up the starting position cannot be discounted.
Vitek has been immense for Bristol City, being a top performer week in and week out at the highest level he has played at in his career.
Already, Vitek has become loved by Bristol fans, as he ranks quite clearly as one of the best shot stoppers in the Championship.
Due to this and how impressive he has been at United during prior pre-seasons, we cannot rule out Vitek seriously challenging Lammens for the starting berth at Old Trafford.
He would certainly be our choice over a signing.
