Will Fish impressed during pre-season

Will Fish played five matches for Manchester United during pre-season, sustaining an injury in the final game of the US tour.

Fish’s presence on the tour was useful amid a lack of centre-backs with Lisandro Martinez still away and Matthijs de Ligt not yet signed.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were also working through fitness issues while new signing Leny Yoro also picked up an injury.

Fish did not let United down and played well, demonstrating a level of competence which highlights his promising future in the game.

Despite this, it did not ever feel as though Fish was being considered as a credible long-term solution at centre-back in a summer of change at the position.

Fish loan spells key to his development

This summer is the right timing for for Will Fish to leave Manchester United, it was time to cut the cord.

Fish made his Manchester United debut in 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but has not had a competitive opportunity since, despite being a pre-season regular.

He has spent the past two seasons on loan at Scottish Premiership side Hibernian, but now it has been agreed his future will lie in the Championship with Cardiff City.
