Manchester United links to Ben Chilwell re-emerge ahead of January transfer window as Chelsea will sanction exit

Manchester United have endured a difficult start to the season and Erik ten Hag is being linked with a defensive addition for January.

The second international break of the season is now here and Manchester United’s campaign so far has been disappointing.

Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Aston Villa means United have won just two of seven Premier League games to start the season.

Add in two draws from two Europa League games and Erik ten Hag is under enormous pressure.

Goals have been a major problem with United scoring just five goals in those seven Premier League outings.

United don’t particularly look too solid defensively either, sparking rumours of a potential left back addition in January.

Manchester United linked with Ben Chilwell again

United were linked with potential Chelsea swap deals before the summer transfer deadline.

Carney Chukwuemeka was considered and Raheem Sterling was even looked at as Jadon Sancho moved to Chelsea.

No exchange was done and United even considered moving for Ben Chilwell according to reports.

Chelsea are happy to let the left back leave and he hasn’t played a minute of Premier League football this season.

Chilwell joined Chelsea for £50million (Sky Sports) in 2020 but now finds himself as a real misfit at Stamford Bridge.

The 27-year-old is surely looking to move in January in order to play first-team football again – and United are being linked again.

Caught Offside claim that United retain an interest in Chilwell and could launch a move in January.

It’s suggested that Chelsea will hold a transfer meeting in December to thrash out their plans.

Chilwell and Chukwuemeka are the two players expected to be available with United having both on the radar.

United issues at left back

Chilwell has been linked with United on multiple occasions but has never truly seemed close to materialising.

United are though having issues at left back and a move for Chilwell may make some sense.

Luke Shaw remains sidelined through injury and the last year has been a case of constant setbacks.

Tyrell Malacia hasn’t played a single game for United for well over a year now and his injury woes continue.

Diogo Dalot has filled in at left back this season but his performances have been up and down.

Dalot’s defending against Tottenham Hotspur was slammed and his performance against Porto wasn’t much better.

If those issues persist through to January, United may well be tempted to make that move for Chilwell once and for all.
