Dan Ashworth ‘in dialogue’ over Raheem Sterling to Manchester United as Chelsea target Jadon Sancho swap

Manchester United are hoping to get Manuel Ugarte snapped up but Dan Ashworth has already turned his attention to another potential deal.

The transfer deadline is now just days away and Manchester United have deals to complete – both in and out of the club.

Manuel Ugarte is now close to joining from Paris Saint-Germain as he heads to England for a medical.

The midfielder’s arrival should see two players leave with Scott McTominay now set to join Napoli.

Fellow midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has undergone a medical with Burnley, meaning it’s a case of one in and two out in United’s engine room.

There could be one more move in the offing though – and it would be something of a swap deal if United can strike an agreement.

Dan Ashworth opens Raheem Sterling talks

Winger Jadon Sancho has been brought back into the United fold this summer after a spat with Erik ten Hag last year.

Sancho may still be on the move though and reports suggest that Chelsea are interested in signing him this week.

Reports claimed that Chelsea would be willing to send Raheem Sterling to United in exchange for Sancho, with Ben Chilwell also on offer.

The Telegraph now claim that United’s Dan Ashworth has now opened talks with Chelsea over a potential deal for Sterling.

Ashworth is thought to have been ‘in dialogue’ with Chelsea earlier on Tuesday with a view to swapping Sancho for Sterling.

Sterling is now being frozen out at Chelsea and will be banished to the Under-21’s unless he moves on this week.

United now appear to be keen with Ashworth no doubt familiar with Sterling from his time in the England setup.

Sterling has only bagged 19 goals and 12 assists in 81 Chelsea appearances but United may offer him an escape route from Stamford Bridge.

David Ornstein on Raheem Sterling

Ashworth may just be figuring out the terms of any swap, no doubt gauging whether any cash would be involved.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein now adds that Sancho is ‘likely’ to leave United with Juventus rivalling Chelsea for his signature.

Ornstein notes that Chelsea likely need this to be a swap deal and Sterling is the ‘most feasible’ option as things stand.

However, Ornstein adds that ‘a lot must happen’ in order for Sterling to join United, suggesting that a deal is nowhere near close.

Any move for Sterling would surely divide United fans – and not just because of his Manchester City ties.

Sterling has not been at his best for a while now and United would be taking on his considerable wages.

United have talented young wingers in Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo whilst Erik ten Hag will be keen to get the best out of Marcus Rashford and Antony.

Adding Sterling would be quite the move from United but there is clearly work to be done this week.
