This summer Manchester United’s recruitment could once again be centred around signing the stars of tomorrow, although they will have to be ready to make an impact in the 2025/26 campaign.

While Ruben Amorim’s team have been poor for the entirety of this season, it was always tough to gauge just how bad things were for Manchester United as there was a struggle to adapt to the 3-4-2-1 formation.

After losing to Newcastle its clear that fans have been watching United’s worst ever Premier League team with relegation worthy form. Due to this, a complete overhaul of the squad is expected to take place this summer.

Due to sitting 14th in the league, it has been widely speculated that United could get rid of at least 10 of Amorim’s unwanted players. This would fund and open up the squad space for several arrivals to improve the team for the 2025/26 season.

While ready-made stars like Matheus Cunha is a top target for United, the majority of players drawing interest are among the most talented young players in Europe.

Manchester United plot a move for both Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham

This summer, United are set to try and sign two of England’s biggest talents, who could both be set to depart Sunderland – Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham.

United in Focus understands, after speaking with Graeme Bailey, that “Ineos would consider signing both of the Sunderland youngsters.

“The interest in Rigg is staggering, as so many clubs want him; more than half of the Premier League and even more abroad.

“United have made a compelling case to him, but I am told that Rigg is not yet willing to make his decision. Borussia Dortmund are really hopeful and their link is strong, as Daniel Dodds, their chief scout, is close to him after being made aware of him some years ago by his brother Mike Dodds, now Wycombe boss, who worked with him at Sunderland.

“Likewise, Dortmund are fully aware of Bellingham. Within football, there is an acceptance that Bellingham has taken a huge step forward this season. His stats through analytics are described as ‘off the charts’, and United’s new footballing department has a strong analytics presence.

“Bellingham is now firmly in United’s sights, as well as analytics, the one thing scouts like about him is his athleticism – they think he could be a very good fit as one of the attacking midfielders in Ruben Amorim’s system.

United failed to land Jude in 2020, but they could now get a deal over the line with Jobe. The cost of Bellingham, which would be less than £30 million, would also tie in with United’s finances for this summer.”

Bellingham and Rigg would be game-changers for Ruben Amorim

United’s midfield could do with being overhauled this summer as Christian Eriksen is set to be released in June, and the club are pushing to be able to sell Casemiro as Saudi Arabian sides have shown interest in a £20m swoop.

Replacing these two ageing players with teenagers who have the potential to become stars would be an instant upgrade. Both have the tenacity and intensity that United’s midfield lacks, and both add real versatility to the ranks being capable as a number 10 or further back.

This is a brilliant, dynamic, and rounded midfield group, with Kone, Ugarte and Collyer the more defensive players. While Rigg, Fernandes, Mainoo and Bellingham could be excellent in the more offensive role.

However, only signing one or the other would still be a real coup for United and a big upgrade for Amorim. These are the kind of deals United should be going all out for, as both would be reminiscent of the business done under Sir Alex Ferguson.
