How Chris Rigg feels about Manchester United interest, Red Devils keen on ‘must-have’ midfield sensation

Manchester United curbed their January spending because they wanted to go big in the summer and the plans for that window are starting to take shape.

Everyone knows there’s a huge rebuilding job up ahead for Man Utd and Ruben Amorim and Fabrizio Romano’s claim of a huge summer window only strengthened that thinking.

After cutting millions off the wage bill in the winter and “taking a risk”, in Amorim’s own words, by not signing more players in the winter, they need a statement summer.

Their key target for that window has now emerged after Patrick Dorgu’s arrival filled the immediate area of need at left wing-back.

Man Utd convinced Chris Rigg is a ‘must-have’

The direction of Man Utd’s transfers has been clear since Ineos arrived, with a focus on signing young and developing players before they truly explode.

This is why an ambitious drive to recruit the best young talent at the academy level has been initiated by the new ownership group.

That seems to be extending to the first team as well, as evidenced by the arrival of Ayden Heaven as a first-team signing.

That drive is about to get a huge boost as United in Focus can report via transfer insider Graeme Bailey that Man Utd have identified Chris Rigg as the club’s key target for the summer window.

Bailey said: “Manchester United are determined not to lose out on Chris Rigg and he is one of their key targets this summer. We can reveal that United’s top scouts have been working on Rigg avidly since 2023 and they are convinced that the young all-action midfielder is a ‘must-have’ for the club.

“We understand that United were one of a number of clubs who showed a close interest in Rigg last summer before he penned his first professional contract.

“The Black Cats hope that promotion would mean they keep Rigg in the short-term although as a club they accept that the Hebburn-born starlet is one of the most wanted young players in world football – with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund both hugely keen.

“Every major Premier League cub is keen, but it is believed that a move to Old Trafford is appealing to him, admiring their pursuit of him.”

Chris Rigg is the perfect Man Utd transfer target

Man Utd are set to lose Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the summer so Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Maino, and Bruno Fernandes are the only remaining reliable options.

Toby Collyer is impressing but is not a sure-shot starter, while Mason Mount’s availability is a perennial question mark.

In Chris Rigg, United are aiming for a left-footed midfielder who can form the backbone of their team for the next decade-and-a-half, if all goes right.

As Bailey says, Rigg is the quintessential “all-action” midfielder who excels in both boxes and is forever adding new skills to his skill set.

That has allowed Sunderland to field him in a remarkable six positions, but it’s clear to see that his best role is as an energetic, ball-playing, and box-crashing midfielder – just the type needed in Amorim’s physical and intense setup.

His signature will be a hard one to secure due to the interest in him but if the capture of Chido Obi and Diego Leon has shown anything, it’s that United have become the place to be for young talent under Ineos.
