Man United fans are completely split over £62.5m Matheus Cunha deal, major ‘concern’ raised

Manchester United appear to be closing in on a potential deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

It is no secret that Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are struggling to score goals this season, and Ineos will want to address that in the summer.

United lost 1-0 to Wolves in their latest Premier League clash, and Matheus Cunha played his role in the only goal by winning a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the box.

Amorim will want a new No.10 in the summer that suits his 3-4-2-1 system – and Cunha certainly ticks all the boxes. United have contacted Cunha’s agent and held positive talks over a potential deal.

According to Laurie Whitwell, United have held positive Cunha talks and Wolves are open to a club paying his £62.5m release clause in instalments. Amorim and Ineos are aligned on bringing him to Old Trafford.

Man United fans react to Matheus Cunha update

Eagle-eyed fans over the weekend spotted that Amorim spoke with Cunha in the tunnel at Old Trafford after United’s 1-0 defeat.

Less than 72 hours later, it seems United are pushing forward to explore a deal for the 25-year-old Brazilian.

While some fans on social media are delighted by the update, others have expressed concern.

“Cunha is the player who is worth 60 million. Wish we spent the 60 million on Cunha instead of Mason Mount. Would have saved us a lot of trouble,” one fan posted.

A second fan wrote: “Cunha is an absolute floor raiser of a signing compared to our current front line. Get it done asap”.

A third agreed that he would be a great signing: “We really don’t need overcomplicate the attacking signings, Cunha is a no-brainer, bags of quality, ball carrying physicality, ball striking, flair. Some may prefer Mbuemo but we’re still getting immense quality.”

“Cunha definitely happening then. Top signing, exactly the level of player we should be targeting,” Another fan agreed.

However, others shared concerns about Cunha’s attitude and work rate.

“Cunha’s shooting accuracy is 55%. That isn’t elite. He’s a baller no doubt but there’s a very high risk of underperformance similar to Sancho,” one fan argued.

Another fan wrote: “Cunha is class but he is *such* a United signing, he’s got attitude problems and has bad work rate which is way more of an issue at a bigger club.”

How Matheus Cunha would fit into Ruben Amorim’s Man United

There are several factors about Cunha that make him a strong signing for United. He’s Premier League proven, fits into Ineos’ transfer strategy as a young talent, and is also familiar with a 3-4-2-1 formation having played it at Wolves.

There have been concerns that Alejandro Garnacho doesn’t suit Amorim’s style given that he prefers to stay out wide and utilise his pace rather than drift narrow.

United chasing Cunha doesn’t confirm that Garnacho will be sold in the summer, but it does put the Argentine’s starting spot under threat.

That is because Cunha has often played as the left-sided No.10 at Wolves, a position Garnacho has filled for Amorim at United. When Amad Diallo returns from injury, he will likely take up the right-sided position in attack.

This is one example of how United could line up with Cunha, without assuming any other deals that will be made in the summer.

However, Ineos will also likely add another striker to Amorim’s squad, with United heavily linked with Victor Osimhen heading into the summer.
