‘I’d advise him to go’… Rio Ferdinand recommends Manchester United’s FA Cup winning hero to leave

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says he would recommend one of the team’s top goalscorers this season to leave.

2024-25 has been a season of change for Manchester United. Clearly as shown by the Premier League table, it is not necessarily change for the better.

United have somehow got worse than last season, ranking in the bottom half, seemingly destined to finish outside the top 10 for the first time in a generation.

New head coach Ruben Amorim has failed to turn results around, although will be given time to re-shape his squad with incomings and outgoings.

Rio Ferdinand recommends Alejandro Garnacho leave

One of only two players to reach double figures for goals this season, Alejandro Garnacho struck his 10th of the season in the loss to Newcastle.

Garnacho is getting minutes under Amorim, but these have been increased by Amad’s injury, but his performances have been mixed.

From Garnacho’s 10 goals, only three have come under Amorim, and after transfer rumours linking him away mid-season, doubts remain over his future this summer.

Former United star Rio Ferdinand says if he was Garnacho’s agent, he would urge the Argentine to leave the club, as Amorim’s system does not suit him.

He told his podcast: “If I was Garnacho’s advisors, I’d be off. I’d advise him to go. They are not going to play him in the position where he’s best, they are not going to get the best out of him.

“And it will work for the club in terms of PSR.”

Alejandro Garnacho exit unthinkable a year ago

It was unthinkable a year ago that Alejandro Garnacho could be sold. The youngster went from winning the FA Youth Cup to winning the FA Cup.

Along with Kobbie Mainoo, Garnacho scored in the FA Cup Final win over City. He was seen as a cornerstone of the team’s future.

Amorim’s arrival has changed this. United no longer play with wingers, and Garnacho has struggled to work as narrower supporting forward, a position that does not play to his strengths.

Ferdinand added that he believes in Garnacho’s potential that he can become a top level player, but his recommendation remains the same.

“I think there’s something there with this kid in the right environment and the right people around him.

“I’m still seeing enough from this kid in a below average team.”
