Leon Goretzka stance on potential move to Manchester United emerges ahead of January transfer window

Manchester United need to have midfield targets in mind for 2025 but one potential signing doesn’t fancy a January transfer.

More changes are surely coming in Manchester United’s midfield.

Kobbie Mainoo has emerged as a star and Manuel Ugarte joined United on deadline day from Paris Saint-Germain.

Those two midfielders will hopefully form United’s engine room for years to come but more signings will be needed.

Christian Eriksen is out of contract in 2025 and is likely to leave whilst Casemiro is wanted in Saudi Arabia with a number of clubs keen.

Having more midfield targets in mind is imperative for United and one big name has now been mentioned.

Manchester United learn Leon Goretzka stance

Reports this week suggest that United are eyeing three more Bayern Munich players.

Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt joined from Bayern over the summer and United could target their former teammates.

Leroy Sane, Alphonso Davies and Leon Goretzka are now being linked as all three potentially prepare to leave Bayern.

Goretzka would another body to United’s midfield ranks but he doesn’t appear to be too keen on a January move.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claims that United may look to make a January signing in midfield and Goretkza is considered an ‘interesting candidate’.

However, Plettenberg claims that Goretzka wants to stay with Bayern until the end of the season rather than make a winter move.

Goretzka is barely featuring for Bayern but may still hesitate on a January transfer if United come calling.

Goretzka the kind of signing United must avoid

Goretzka has been a big name in Europe since joining Bayern from Schalke in 2018.

A tall and physical box-to-box midfield player, Goretzka has racked up nearly 250 appearances for Bayern whilst scoring more than 40 gaol.

That kind of presence could be a fine addition to United’s midfield but Goretzka appears to be a player on the decline.

The Germany international turns 30 in February and has played just one minute of Bundesliga action so far this season.

Vincent Kompany doesn’t appear to want Goretzka at Bayern whilst Julian Nagelsmann left him out of the Germany squad at Euro 2024.

Nagelsmann has previously described Goretzka as ‘one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe’ but still left him out over the summer.

Goretzka isn’t the player he was four or even two years ago and appears to have lost a little of the athleticism which made him so good in the first place.

Investing in a midfielder who is already battling to recover his best form is the kind of move United would have made in the Glazer era.

Ineos need to be smarter and look to find promising players to develop into stars rather than attempt to bring Goretzka back to what he was a few years ago.
