How Man Utd plan to test West Ham’s resolve over Mateus Fernandes price tag

West Ham need money from player sales after being relegated from the Premier League, with Mateus Fernandes heavily linked with moves to Manchester United, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

Plans are underway at Manchester United to strengthen in the summer. After finishing third in the Premier League, Michael Carrick will want to be backed in the transfer window to kick on again next season.

The midfield area is the biggest priority amid Casemiro’s departure, leading to what feels like an ever-growing list of targets.

West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has been on United’s radar despite a difficult season at the London Stadium.

West Ham want £80m for Mateus Fernandes

Fernandes is set to leave West Ham after their relegation to the Championship.

West Ham need to raise £100m from player sales as a result, and it could be argued that the former Sporting CP midfielder is their most valuable asset.

Arsenal are keen on adding Fernandes to their Premier League title-winning squad, but United have also identified the Portugal international as Carrick looks to revamp his midfield.

According to Ben Jacobs, West Ham value Fernandes at approximately £80m because they want double what they paid to Southampton (£38m + £4m).

The journalist adds that Fernandes does not have a relegation release clause, but he is expected to be sold before the start of the new season.

Jacobs stresses that West Ham need to make £100m in sales this summer, so United and other potential suitors will test their resolve in the transfer market.

West Ham are bound to search for the best deal they can get, but clubs like Arsenal and United won’t want to overpay for the 21-year-old star.

United are willing to pay around £50m for Fernandes, which is significantly less than what West Ham are currently demanding.

Fernandes was left out of the Portugal squad for the 2026 World Cup, but a deal could drag on unless West Ham accepts that £80m is too high a valuation.

Man Utd’s previous signing from West Ham

The last senior player United signed from West Ham was Carlos Tevez.

The 2007 transfer was complex due to the third-party ownership issues, as well as the Argentine striker’s controversial decision to jump from United to Man City.

Only time will tell if Fernandes will become the latest West Ham player to move to Old Trafford.
