The two driving factors behind Man Utd’s pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United have identified West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes as a midfield target before the summer transfer window opens.

West Ham were one of the three clubs relegated from the Premier League this past season, which means they are bound to lose star players over the summer.

This could spark an opening or two for Manchester United, with Jarrod Bowen linked with a switch to Old Trafford from the London Stadium.

United are also targeting Mateus Fernandes to help revamp the midfield department. The West Ham midfielder didn’t make Portugal’s squad for the 2026 World Cup and has the entire summer to decide on his future.

Mateus Fernandes could provide competition for Kobbie Mainoo

Fernandes has been a silver lining in what was a disappointing season for West Ham, as they lost their Premier League status and returned to the Championship.

It was announced on Tuesday that Nuno Espírito Santo will remain manager next season as he attempts to take the Hammers back to the top-flight.

However, Nuno will have to do that without some of the star players he’s been working with at West Ham.

The i Paper claims United intend to make a move for Fernandes in the coming weeks.

Also outlined in the report are United’s two biggest reasons for targeting Fernandes. They include his ability to receive the ball over the pitch and how he would provide great competition for Kobbie Mainoo.

This means that signing Fernandes would help Michael Carrick add quality as well as depth to his squad ahead of the new season.

Furthermore, sources have told the outlet that United is Fernandes’ preferred destination if he leaves West Ham.

Mateus Fernandes transfer could break Championship record

West Ham will demand approximately £60m for Fernandes after being relegated from the Premier League.

That means a potential transfer involving Fernandes is likely to set a new record for a player leaving the Championship.

The current record is Romero Lavia’s £53m+ add-ons move from Southampton to Chelsea in 2023.
