Manchester United are among the teams interested in a late move for French forward Mathys Tel.

After it was reported Mathys Tel wished to leave Bayern Munich, we suggested Manchester United may revisit interest first reported in February 2024.

The Athletic now report United have expressed interest in Tel, who Bayern prefer to leave on loan rather than permanently.

As if by magic, Mathys Tel was selected to start his first Champions League game of the season, as the German club took on Slovan Bratislava on January 29.

How Mathys Tel fared

Mathys Tel lined up on the left wing, with Harry Kane occupying the striker spot. He played 62 minutes in the 3-1 win. He had played only 29 minutes in the Champions League all season up until this point.

Tel was lively, coming close to scoring. He had two shots on target and three off target, and also saw two blocked, while completing 90 per cent of his passes.

German outlet Spox graded Tel’s performance as a 3/5, noting that played like he was ‘undeterred’ by the speculation.

Their ratings read: “As a left-wing player, the 19-year-old was clearly trying hard, but was also unlucky with his seven shots on goal. He worked well in defence and Tel received gentle applause for winning the ball in the 38th minute.”

RAN gave Tel a 4/5, noting that he had not played a single minute in three preceding matches. They praised his lively first 25 minutes, before adding that he ‘deteriorated’ before being substituted just after the hour.

Former Bayern player Michael Ballack told Sport.de that he viewed Tel’s selection as ‘a bit surprising’ in the context of his season to date, and the rumours over his future.

Tel future ‘unclear’

Speaking to Sky Germany, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl admitted he did not know what the future holds for Mathys Tel, 19, who has been unhappy with a lack of chances under Vincent Kompany.

He said: “We spoke in December, and Mathys said he wanted to assert himself.

“Now he has said he would like to leave. Now we have to think about whether we will do it and what we will do.”

Manchester United struck two deals with Bayern Munich in the summer for Noussair Mazrouai and Matthijs de Ligt.
