Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United, though only five players have ever made the direct transfer from the Bernabeu to Old Trafford.

Manchester United have a range of midfielders on their radar, but Aurelien Tchouameni has remained a top target since the summer transfer window opened.

Despite reports of Tchouameni agreeing a new contract at Real Madrid, The Sun claims Los Blancos are willing to cash in on the French midfielder to make space for new signings.

While this transfer saga could drag on for several more weeks, United In Focus looks back at the five players who traded Real Madrid for Old Trafford, including four permanent signings and one loan deal.

Laurie Cunningham

As one of the most talented players of his generation, Laurie Cunningham was unfortunately plagued with injuries. In 1983, left Barcelona to sign for United on loan. Ron Atkinson was responsible for bringing Cunningham to United after previously being his manager at West Ham, but injuries meant he was limited to just five appearances.

Angel Di Maria

Fresh off winning the Champions League in 2014, Angel Di Maria signed for United in a deal worth £59.7m. The Argentine wore the iconic No. 7 shirt but flopped after an encouraging start at the club. There was friction with Louis van Gaal, which led to his departure for Paris Saint-Germain after just one season.

Alvaro Carreras

Formerly known as Alvaro Fernandez during his time at United, Alvaro Carraras joined the club’s academy in 2020 on a four-year contract, having spent three years with Real Madrid’s youth set-up. Carraras had many admirers at United before Erik ten Hag overlooked him at left-back by signing Sergio Reguilon on loan. This led to Carraras leaving for Benfica, but he’s now back at Real Madrid.

Raphael Varane

Raphael Varane arrived at United in 2021 in a £34m deal. It was huge news at the time because Varane joined as not just a World Cup-winner, but also having won the Champions League four times. Sadly, Varane’s peak years were beyond him. He left Old Trafford in 2024 as a free agent after winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup under Ten Hag.

Casemiro

At the end of the 2022 summer transfer window, Casemiro signed for United in a deal worth £60m. The Brazilian proved to be a great club servant during his time at Old Trafford and helped guide Michael Carrick’s team to a third-place finish in his final season before signing for Inter Miami as a free agent.
