Aurelien Tchouameni joins list of La Liga stars to use Man Utd interest as leverage for bumper new deal

Aurélien Tchouaméni has signed a new contract at Real Madrid, despite being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.

There have been many conflicting claims about Aurelien Tchouameni’s future at Real Madrid in the past 24 hours, even though the French midfielder is competing in the latter stages of the 2026 World Cup.

Reports in Spain suggested the Reds made a lucrative contract offer to sign Tchouameni, but the 26-year-old has now committed his future to Real Madrid on fresh terms.

This means Tchouameni joins a list of players in La Liga to use interest from United as leverage for a bumper contract.

According to The Athletic, Tchouameni has signed a new contract with Real Madrid until 2031.

The Frenchman’s previous deal at Real Madrid was set to expire in the summer of 2028, but he has committed his future to the Santiago Bernabeu on new terms.

It was previously reported that Real Madrid were open to selling Tchouameni or another big-name midfielder to make room for new signings as Jose Mourinho attempts to rebuild the squad.

However, that will not involve Tchouameni, who has been a primary target for United this summer.

United fans will be familiar with this trick from top players in La Liga because being linked with the biggest club in England has resulted in many players being offered bigger contracts to stay put.

Take Sergio Ramos as a prime example in 2015, when Louis van Gaal was trying to strengthen United’s defence. The Reds offered around £30m for the former Spain international before he signed a five-year deal at Real Madrid worth an estimated £123,000 a week after tax.

Yet respected Spanish football expert Graham Hunter went on record that summer, insisting Ramos was not using United to get a better deal at Madrid.

Hunter told talkSPORT: “Sergio Ramos and his brother Rene, who is also his agent, are not toying with Manchester United. Ramos is undoubtedly unhappy with the way he’s been treated at Real Madrid.

“Is this story coming about simply so that United can be a stalking horse and Ramos can get more money? The answer is no.

“Ramos is the type of man who on the point of principle will ask to leave, he will force his way out. He would experiment with British football.”

Another former La Liga star who United believe used their interest to leverage an improved deal to remain in Spain is former Uruguay international Diego Godin.

It was 2018 when Jose Mourinho was keen to land a central defender before the window shut and had hoped that Godin, 32 at the time, could be the answer to his problems.

Godin went on to sign a new deal with Atletico, despite his agent telling United that he was keen to move to Old Trafford, as per Sky Sports.

This is something United need to be wary of when trying to sign players from the big clubs in Spain.

Who was the last player Man Utd signed from La Liga?

The last player United signed from a La Liga club was Casemiro in August 2022 for a fee of around £50 million.

The Brazilian veteran, who left Old Trafford this summer following the expiry of his contract, became a favourite among United fans.
