Europa League club’s board suggest signing Manchester United defender but manager left unconvinced

Manchester United need to offload players in the January transfer window and one veteran appears to be attracting real interest.

Manchester United’s summer net spend stood at around £100million as Ineos attempted to back Erik ten Hag whilst somewhat balancing the books.

The problem now is that United don’t have much room in the budget for January signings.

Ruben Amorim isn’t expecting a busy January with United seemingly unable to make considerable additions.

Nuno Mendes appears to be United’s top target but affording the Paris Saint-Germain ace is another matter.

Players need to move on and whilst Casemiro is wanted in Saudi Arabia, another veteran player is attracting interest.

Rangers board suggest Manchester United raid

Defender Jonny Evans finds himself on the fringes at Old Trafford.

The veteran centre back has appeared just twice under Amorim, totalling 102 minutes of action.

Evans is out of contract at the end of the season and the 37-year-old currently looks likely to move on.

The veteran presence Evans has provided since returning to the club in 2023 has been hugely valuable.

A move away in 2025 seems inevitable though and Kris Boyd recently suggested Rangers move for Evans.

That may well come true as the Daily Record claim that the Rangers board have put Evans forward as a potential January signing.

As things stand, Rangers boss Philippe Clement isn’t entirely sure about the move with Evans’ age believed to be putting him off.

Clement may yet change his mind but the Rangers hierarchy feel that Evans can make a positive impact on a Rangers side lacking defensive depth right now.

Manchester United can’t be sentimental amid Jonny Evans interest

United need big changes in 2025 and that means making some tough decisions.

Popular players may well move on as Amorim seeks to mould this squad into his own.

Evans would fit that bill having proven himself as a great leader in a United squad where character has ben questioned.

Many would no doubt love to keep Evans around the club until he decides to hang up his boots but there must be some ruthlessness.

Letting Evans go this month should not be off the table and offering him a new contract should not be in the plans as things stand.

Whether Rangers go ahead with a move or not remains to be seen, but if they come knocking, United simply have to consider a deal.
