Manchester United legend David de Gea could be on the verge of making his sensational return to football after seven months without a club, according to reports.
David de Gea became a free agent at the end of the previous campaign after the former Red Devils star’s contract with Manchester United expired.
It was believed the 33-year-old Spaniard, who won the Premier League Golden Glove, was willing to accept a pay cut to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
De Gea was reportedly earning a mammoth £375,000-per-week wage at the Red Devils, but talks over a new deal for the United legend broke down.
United manager Erik ten Hag was subsequently reunited with former Ajax star Andre Onana, who was snapped up from Serie A side Inter Milan in a £47.2m deal.
De Gea has not played first-team football since his exit from United and it was reported last September that the ex-United star was considering retirement.
United legend De Gea to sign for new club?
David de Gea didn’t make his immediate return to football after his exit from Old Trafford, despite the former Manchester United star attracting interest.
He was linked with a reunion with former United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo after it was reported that Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr wanted to sign him last November.
De Gea has also been linked with a return to the Premier League amid interest from Newcastle, although Eddie Howe has played down the idea of the Magpies signing him.
According to The Daily Mail, De Gea is now ‘in talks’ with Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab and a move to Saudi Arabia could be on the table for the United legend.
The newspaper added that Al Shabab are targeting De Gea alongside other signings, including Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic and Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech.
Could De Gea play for new club after United?
De Gea has sat patiently on the sideline and appears keen to sign for a new club where he is able to secure regular first-team football.
The former Spain international has attracted interest from around the world since his departure from United, including from clubs in his native homeland.
However, it remains to be seen if a potentially lucrative offer from the Saudi Pro League could entice De Gea to make his long-awaited return to football.
While it was previously reported that De Gea had considered retiring after his United exit, the ex-Spain No 1’s future remains up in the air and it seems like he is not done with football.
