Blow for Martin Dubravka as Newcastle United eye David De Gea

Newcastle United are now looking into signing David De Gea in a major blow for former Manchester United stopper Martin Dubravka.

We sadly all saw how Newcastle dominated against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United on Saturday.

The Magpies only won 1-0 but few United fans would have argued with a much heavier defeat based on the way the game went.

United could barely get close to Newcastle in the first half and Ten Hag has come in for criticism after a dismal display.

It wasn’t all good news for Newcastle though with Nick Pope picking up a shoulder injury which will rule him out well into 2024.

Newcastle United now want David De Gea

Pope’s injury is a huge blow for Newcastle and it may just lead them into the transfer market.

The Daily Mail report that Newcastle are now considering a move for a very familiar name – David De Gea.

That’s right, Newcastle are reportedly considering a move to sign De Gea on a free transfer to fill in for Pope.

De Gea has been without a club since leaving United at the end of his contract over the summer.

There have been strong links surrounding a move back to Spain with Real Betis and even rumoured interest from David Beckham and Inter Miami.

De Gea may yet return to the Premier League though with Newcastle now weighing up a move to sign the former United star.

That would give De Gea the chance to play against United at Old Trafford when the two sides meet again in April.

Martin Dubravka may now be set for disappointment

A move for De Gea would be a bitter disappointment for former United stopper Martin Dubravka.

The Slovakian spent the first half of last season on loan at United, serving as backup to De Gea.

Dubravka ended up heading back to Newcastle earlier than planned having made just two appearances.

Now serving as Pope’s backup, Dubravka came on against United on Saturday and saw out their 1-0 victory.

Dubravka will have been hoping to step up as Newcastle’s first-choice stopper until Pope returns.

That may not happen now though, with Dubravka potentially facing up to a major sense of deja vu by sitting on the bench whilst De Gea plays.
