Manchester United are now seeing Donyell Malen hit some impressive form for Borussia Dortmund following January transfer rumours.
United wanted to offload Jadon Sancho in January and Borussia Dortmund always seemed like his most likely destination.
Sancho previously excelled for Dortmund and United fans didn’t see anywhere near the same level from him at Old Trafford.
Sancho’s exclusion under Erik ten Hag paved the way for a return to Dortmund in January with the wide man securing a loan deal until the end of the season.
There were suggestions of a potential swap deal though with reports in December suggesting that United had held talks to sign Dortmund forward Donyell Malen in exchange for Sancho.
Malen was allegedly offered to United but no deal was done – and the Dutchman now finds himself in great form.
Donyell Malen thriving after Manchester United swap rumours
Malen has blown hot and cold for Dortmund since joining in 2021 but he is certainly in a hot streak now.
The 25-year-old scored twice on Saturday, helping Dortmund beat Freiburg 3-0.
Two superb right-footed finishes saw Malen take Freiburg down and that was his second brace in side a month.
Malen also scored twice in a 4-0 win over Koln in January, finding the net with two more right-footed efforts.
It’s now four goals in four games for Malen and five in his last seven Bundesliga games, showing great form after those United rumours.
Some may know Malen as a striker but he has been playing on the right flank this season and he is now making a major impact in front of goal.

United surely keeping tabs on Malen
Malen’s mixed record at Dortmund meant we weren’t overly excited about the rumours in the first place, but his recent form is difficult to ignore.
United will surely be watching Malen with interest, especially as a permanent swap involving him and Sancho could still materialise in the summer.
Malen’s pace will be very appealing to Ten Hag given his desire to create a great transition team, whilst his ability to play on the right flank and up front gives some tactical flexibility.
Add in that Malen shares an agent with Ten Hag and we can imagine that United have one eye on the former Arsenal prospect, just in case a deal becomes possible.
