Belgian talent reacts to ‘special’ Manchester United rumours, teammates keep talking about Old Trafford move

Manchester United clearly need major work in the transfer market this summer and Ruben Amorim may need to consider his goalkeeping options.

Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur once again summed up the problems at Manchester United.

A soft goal won it for Spurs whilst United posted another blank in front of goal as scoring remains a concern.

Ruben Amorim is far from blameless here but United will surely be in for a busy summer.

A number of signings are needed and whilst United will be eyeing attacking solutions, other areas need some attention too.

Belgian talent reacts to Manchester United rumours

Andre Onana has struggled at times this season with some sloppy errors costing United goals.

Altay Bayindir was the hero against Arsenal in January’s FA Cup tie but he may not be the answer in the long term, so United may need two goalkeepers this summer.

United target Zion Suzuki is dazzling in Italy whilst reports suggest that United are eyeing Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund.

Another name emerged in December though with United keen on signing Senne Lammens from Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

Lammens has emerged as Antwerp’s first-choice goalkeeper this season and is attracting admiring glances for his displays in Belgium.

The 22-year-old would likely be viewed as competition at United rather than a replacement for Onana and he has now commented on the speculation.

Speaking to Gazet van Antwerpen, Lammens admitted that ‘wow’ was his initial reaction upon hearing that United want to sign him.

Lammens added that the rumours were ‘special’ for him and that his Antwerp teammates were constantly talking about him going to Old Trafford in training.

Lammens believes that English football is ideal for him on a physical level, and hinted that he is now tracking United just as much as United are tracking him.

“The first time I heard it, I thought: wow, Immediately a world team that follows you. That is special,” said Lammens.

“Of course, I was also spoken to about it a lot and when I made a save in training, it was United this, United that. Funny, I would do it the other way around too. But you can’t dwell on it for too long. They are still just rumours.

“Those top clubs have so many scouts and follow so many players. So it doesn’t have to mean anything yet. It will only become clear in the summer whether anything comes of it. But of course it’s only positive. Especially because it’s the best competition in the world and my profile – my stature and way of playing – is similar to English football. You have to physically hold your own there and that suits me.

“You do follow the teams that follow you a little bit, but it’s not like I’m watching entire matches. Summaries are enough,” he added.

Senne Lammens on summer transfer

Lammens is clearly flattered by United’s interest and refused to close the door on a summer transfer.

The stopper suggested that he would seriously consider leaving if an offer worked for both him and Antwerp, but he would be happy to stay put if no deal materialises.

“Wow, hard to say. Then I’ve only played one full season at Antwerp,” said Lammens.

“If something comes along that I can hardly say ‘no’ to and that will benefit the club, I’ll have to think about it seriously. But if I’m the first keeper here for another year, that’s no problem,” he added.

United appear to have Lammens identified as a potential signing but much will depend on the future of Bayindir.

Bayindir was expected to leave in January and his pursuit of first-team action may see him leave Old Trafford this summer.

That would open up a spot for Lammens to come in and hopefully push Onana, who should not be safe from the axe after a disappointing season.
