Ajax director explains why summer move for Christian Eriksen fell through

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen could have completed a move away from Old Trafford over the summer.

Since moving to Manchester United on a free transfer from Brentford back in the summer of 2022, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen has become a bit part player for the Red Devils after being one of the first-choice players under Erik ten Hag in his debut campaign.

However, since the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo, Eriksen has found his game time at Old Trafford limited and a transfer looked a possibility in the summer.

Despite this, no move was forthcoming. Former club Ajax were reportedly keen on Eriksen but they couldn’t get a deal done.

Ajax sporting director explains interest in Christian Eriksen

Eriksen’s agent had previously explained that a move to Ajax was certainly not happening this summer when he was linked with a return to the Dutch side.

“We can end those speculations,” said Martin Schoots when speaking to Voetbal International, maintaining that Eriksen intends to stay with United rather than return to Ajax.

As well as a move to Ajax, Eriksen and Brazilian winger Antony were linked with a late loan move to Spanish side Real Betis.

Speaking to Dutch outer ESPN.NL, Ajax’s sporting director has had his say on the links to the Danish midfielder and it does appear that they were indeed keen on bringing Eriksen back to the Eredivisie.

“He was definitely on the list, on the long list. A boy from the club, experience, routine and a good footballer.

“Ultimately, we were unable to create space for this due to various circumstances,” he said.

Eriksen’s agent Schoots has also revealed that there were informal contacts with Anderlecht over a move.

The Jupiler Pro League side have until Friday [Belgium deadline] to make new additions to their squad. Het Laatste Nieuws claim Anderlecht have now ended their interest in the midfielder.

The time is coming for Christian Eriksen to leave Manchester United

Eriksen has become a squad player for the Red Devils and his time at Old Trafford could well be coming to an end.

The Danish midfielder is no longer one of the key players for the Red Devils with academy prospect Toby Collyer seemingly jumping ahead of the 32-year-old in the pecking order.

All of the talk following Sunday’s heavy defeat to Liverpool has been Casemiro’s struggles in midfield but the Brazilian isn’t the only midfielder who needs to move on. After two years at the club, Eriksen’s time is also running out.
