£18m ace linked to Manchester United claimed he rated Marcus Rashford as the best player he had ever played with

Callum Wilson, when asked to name the best player he had ever shared a dressing room with in his professional career, was certainly not short of options.

The Newcastle United striker currently plies his trade at St James’ Park alongside Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and the masterful Brazililian Bruno Guimaraes. During six years at AFC Bournemouth, Wilson called Nathan Ake, Aaron Ramsdale and Tyrone Mings his team-mates.

What’s more, while earning his nine caps for the England national team, the experienced centre-forward also spent some time training with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jadon Sancho, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jude Bellingham, Jack Grealish and (towards the end of a fabulous playing career) one Wayne Rooney.

But one stands out head and shoulders above the rest as far as Wilson is concerned, his name leaping to mind when Newcastle’s number nine mulled over a question posed to him by JD Sports in May of last year.

Manchester United offered £18 million Newcastle star

“The best player I’ve probably played with is Marcus Rashford,” Wilson said, the Manchester United forward scoring goals for fun under Erik ten Hag at the time.

“I think he’s now come into form and people are seeing the best of him. But, even before that, as someone who’s played with him and trained with him, you see his quality and how good he actually is.

“You’re waiting for him to do it on more regular and consistent basis, and now he’s doing that, the whole world are kind of putting him in the category that he should be in.”

Rashford’s form – like many in the Man United squad – has dipped pretty alarmingly during the current campaign. After scoring 30 times last term, he’s netted only four times this, a lack of consistent goaslcorers – coupled with Antony Martial’s latest injury – forcing the Red Devils into the winter market once again.

Callum Wilson and Marcus Rashford reunited?

And HITC Football understands that none other than Callum Wilson has been offered to the Red Devils. While rather unflattering comparisons may be drawn with Wout Weghorst and Odion Ighalo – two other 30-something strikers who arrived to plug a gap in the United attack mid-season – Wilson brings with him a guarantee of goals at this level, if not longevity. He scored 18 in the Premier League last season. One more than Rashford managed, by the way.

And should Man United take up an opportunity offered to them – presuming Ten Hag has the £18 million required at his disposal – Rashford will perhaps be as excited to work with Wilson as Wilson will be to work with Rashford.

Fantastic with his back to goal and a master link-man; Wilson’s broad-shouldered brand of physical centre-forward play makes him not only the perfect foil for Rashford and an ideal mentor for Rasmus Hojlund, but a potentially inspired, relatively low-cost, low-risk signing for a Manchester United side crying out for a ruthless edge.
