Marcus Rashford could lose his place in the England squad for Euro 2024 unless Manchester United’s struggling forward improves his Premier League form.
On Saturday night at St James’ Park, there was an English winger in the form of his life, scoring the only goal of the game while performing with such intensity and drive. And then there was Marcus Rashford.
The contrast between the displays of Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford, in truth, summed up the contrast between Newcastle United and Manchester United.
One at the top of their game. The other seemingly disinterested and almost entirely inneffective. Frozen solid on a baltic night on Tyneside.

Manchester United lose yet again
“If Gareth Southgate watched the game – and he will have – the answer would have to be yes,” Rangers legend Ally McCoist tells talkSPORT (4th December, 9am) when asked if Rashford should be worried about his England place ahead of next summer’s European Championships.
“Gareth is very loyal to players, and so he should be. Most of the international managers are loyal to players who show a bit of form with the national team. And I get that.
“But there comes a point where form and lack of game time at your club must come into consideration, no doubt about it. If you were there on Saturday night, Anthony Gordon is in that squad miles before Marcus Rashford.”
Gordon now has six goals and three assists in the Premier League this season. Rashford, in contrast, has just two and one to his name, and never looked like boosting those highly underwhelming numbers for a second at St James’ Park.
It is only nine months or so since Man United’s number ten could legitimately have been described as the most in-form attacker in the whole of Europe. Right now, that feels like lightyears ago.
Only two Premier League goals
“He had a particularly disappointing evening,” McCoist. His form hasn’t been good this season. His form will have to pick up because (there is competition for) that position. Probably more than any in the England squad.
“You’re talking Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Rashford, Gordon. They’ve got talent in those wide positions. And, at this moment in time, Rashford’s form is not good.”
