Player doing ‘fantastic’ things after Manchester United exit with 4 goals in 5

Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst now has four goals in his last five games with Netherlands legend Ronald de Boer hailing the Hoffenheim frontman after his stunning effort against the Republic of Ireland.

Who are you and what have you done with Wout Weghorst?

Any Manchester United supporters who tuned in to watch their former loanee lead the line against Stephen Kenny’s Ireland outfit could have forgiven for demanding Weghorst be unmasked like a Scooby Doo villain at full-time, almost expecting to discover that Robin van Persie had sneaked onto the pitch wearing his jersey.

Weghorst’s stunning first-half winner was a million miles away from what the oft-maligned centre-forward produced his during short-lived spell at Old Trafford, shrugging off a defender, carrying the ball towards the edge of the area and thumping a fierce finish into the top corner from nearly 20 yards.

“Of course he feels undervalued and he is right about that. He has scored a lot of goals in qualifying, so I understand his frustration,” De Boer tells Ziggo Sport, throwing his weigh behind a man who’s continued presence in the Netherlands frontline continues to be a source of much debate back home.

“He looks a bit clumsy but he is effective. I think he is very good what he does.”

Weghorst has now scored four goals in his last five games for club and country. That is more than the journeyman powerhouse managed (two) in 31 outings under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Weghorst, back in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim, could find himself leading the line for Ronald Koeman’s side next summer in Germany, his Ireland screamer securing a seat on the plane to Euro 2024.

Four goals in five games

“Well, I think it’s a fantastic goal,” Koeman beams, via Voetbal Primeur. “Wout is important with goals. But not only on the field, also off the field. How he experiences being with the Dutch national team… That is great.”
