Since the year 2000, Manchester United have been on a whirlwind of a journey. It feels like a long time ago now, but this includes a Champions League victory in 2008, and multiple Premier League titles.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement ended United’s dynasty of success, and the Red Devils have been a challenging watch ever since, with plenty of false dawns.

We have seen several top centre-backs represent Manchester United since 2000, and we are asking you to name your favourites. Let’s run through the contenders.

Jaap Stam

An absolute man-mountain of a player, Jaap Stam was an intimidating centre-back who mastered the position. With a combination of strength and pace, the Dutchman’s time at the club coincided with a period of total dominance.

Stam played for the club for three seasons, won three Premier League titles, with half of his tenure stretching into the 2000s.

He infamously fell out with Ferguson after writing a controversial autobiography and was immediately sold to Lazio. United lost the league the following season.

Laurent Blanc

Manchester United’s solution in 2001/02 to replacing Jaap Stam was to sign World Cup winning centre-back Laurent Blanc on a free transfer.

There was one problem with this, Blanc was 35-years-old and clearly past his best. There was no comparison to peak Jaap Stam.

Blanc still did enough to earn an extension for a second season at United, playing 19 Premier League games as the club won the title in 2002/03.

Wes Brown

After breaking into the Manchester United team as a right-back, Wes Brown demonstrated that he was also very capable at centre-back.

Brown’s career was heavily impacted by injuries, but when he was fit, he rarely let United down, and played more than 360 appearances for United.

The academy graduate began to form an impressive partnership with Rio Ferdinand at one point, before Ferguson decided to buy Nemanja Vidic for competition.

Mikael Silvestre

Mikael Silvestre was a utility defender for United, able to play at left-back and centre-back, and a player Sir Alex Ferguson trusted.

Silvestre played more than 30 games in four Premier League title winning seasons. He was sold to Arsenal in 2008.

Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand was a game changer for Manchester United when he signed for the club in 2002, introduced wearing an ill-advised white suit.

Ferdinand made up for his fashion faux pas with his performances, raising the levels of existing defensive options Brown, Blanc and Silvestre.

While Ferdinand did miss the bulk of the 2003/04 season due to a missed drugs test, when he returned he showed he had not missed a beat.

Ferdinand established himself as one of the club’s greats, forming a superb partnership with Nemanja Vidic, winning the Champions League in 2008.

He played 455 games for United, winning six Premier League titles.

Nemanja Vidic

Nemanja Vidic was a true powerhouse and the perfect complement to Ferdinand’s more technically assured style of football.

Vidic’s arrival took United up a level, and is one of the club’s best ever bargains at £7 million.

Vidic accomplished the rare feat of winning the Premier League Player of the Season as a centre-back, and remarkably did it twice, in 2008/09 and 2010/11.

Along with Ferdinand and with the help of Edwin van der Sar in goal, he helped United set a record of 1,311 minutes without conceding a Premier League goal.

Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling signed for United from Fulham and was groomed as a potential successor to Rio Ferdinand.

Smalling did not reach those levels, and expecting him to do so was probably unfair. Judging his career on it’s own merits, Smalling can say his time at United was a success overall.

He spent 10 years under contract to United, making 323 appearances and winning two Premier League titles. Not bad for a player who began his career in non-league.

Phil Jones

Another young defender signed by Sir Alex Ferguson, hopes were high that Phil Jones could become one of the absolute greats.

Jones’ career at United proved challenging, having to try and break up the Vidic and Ferdinand partnership, and then Ferguson’s retirement destabilised everything around the club.

At his best Jones was a player who would put his body on the line, and sometimes to his detriment. He was forced into an early retirement after a nightmare with injuries.

Spending more than a decade at the club, Jones played only 229 games.

Marcos Rojo

Signed under Louis van Gaal, Marcos Rojo was a squad player who had strong experience at international level with Argentina.

Rojo somehow managed to avoid a red card during his time at United. He enjoyed a strong partnership alongside Phil Jones for a spell in 2016/17 – but neither could last. Rojo was another player impacted by the injury curse.

Eric Bailly

Eric Bailly was the first defensive signing made under Jose Mourinho, and his first season at the club was a huge success.

Bailly evoked memories of Nemanja Vidic with his uncompromising style, but after 2016/17, it was all downhill.

The Ivorian suffered badly with injuries, and his performances dipped along with it. United ended up releasing him in 2022, and he has failed to prove the club wrong to do so.

Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof did not hit the heights Manchester United or Jose Mourinho hoped for, but he is worth a mention.

After a shaky start, Lindelof formed a strong partnership alongside Harry Maguire under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He played 284 games for United in total.

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire signed for a staggering £80 million fee to become Manchester United’s most expensive defender ever.

Maguire was instantly made Manchester United captain, and this responsibility along with the high fee prompted plenty of criticism.

Manchester United fans have learned to appreciate Maguire a little more in recent seasons, with the defender’s commitment never in question.

No longer captain, Maguire is still a leader, and has discovered a habit for scoring important goals, recently with a headed winner at Anfield.

Lisandro Martinez

Lisandro Martinez is an excellent defender on his day, playing with a combination of tenacity, passion, and on-ball quality.

The trouble for Martinez has been staying fit. He has suffered injuries from a broken metatarsal to a torn ACL, and he has only just returned.

Raphael Varane

For a short while, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane formed a partnership that evoked memories of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

The trouble for both players was their fitness, while Varane was at the tail-end of his career after spending his best years at Real Madrid.

The duo showed their quality when they returned from injury for Varane’s final match, to shut out Erling Haaland and help United to win the 2024 FA Cup Final.

Jonny Evans

Jonny Evans was so good he played for Manchester United across two spells, and many feel he never should have been sold.

Evans returned to United on a free transfer in 2023 and rolled back the clock, showing he could still contribute at the highest level into his mid-30s.

Matthijs de Ligt

The best is yet to come from Matthijs de Ligt, who signed for United in 2024 and displays all the traits of a Manchester United captain.

De Ligt has a chance to be a key player at the club for the next five years, and lay a claim to be remembered as one of the top defenders of the next 25 years.
