Why Man United should not be worried about Liverpool joining the Mateus Fernandes race

The longer Manchester United’s transfer saga over Mateus Fernandes rumbles on, the more clubs are entering the race for his signature.

Manchester United turned their attention to Mateus Fernandes after signing Ederson, and there are multiple reports that the Red Devils are in advanced talks with the player and West Ham.

West Ham want £80m for Fernandes, which is well above United’s valuation. As a result, Ineos have taken a patient approach, knowing that Fernandes is “desperate” to join United and play alongside compatriot Bruno Fernandes.

But Tottenham are showing interest in Fernandes, Real Madrid and PSG have been linked, and now even Liverpool are getting involved.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Liverpool interest in Mateus Fernandes

Speaking on the Born ‘N Red YouTube channel, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool have also been in contact about Fernandes.

“I will tell you something that was not so public in the recent days and weeks. Liverpool made a call two weeks ago to understand the situation Mateus Fernandes at West Ham, to understand the price and conditions, but they didn’t return with any bid or any official conversation.

“But they made a call two weeks ago, I can guarantee that. Tottenham and Manchester United are busy with a deal, so there are so many clubs involved.

“The player is going to be expensive, more than £85million. It means Liverpool are working on midfielders.”

Man United are still in control of the Mateus Fernandes saga

United appear to have gone quiet around Fernandes after previous reports claimed an opening bid was imminent.

Since then, Tottenham, Liverpool and PSG appear to be circling the Portuguese midfielder.

But United fans should rest easy simply because Fernandes wants to move to Old Trafford. Ineos will only sign players that want to join the project, and it seems Fernandes is prioritising United.

The reason for the delay is likely down to the financial reporting period, which ends on June 30th. United know that West Ham need cash, and as a result, the asking price for Fernandes should drop.

No rival clubs have made a bid, and that signals that United are still in control of this transfer race.
