Teddy Sheringham says the ‘jury’s still out’ on Man Utd target Mateus Fernandes

Former Manchester United and West Ham striker Teddy Sheringham has shared a not-so-glowing verdict of Mateus Fernandes.

The interest in Mateus Fernandes is growing by the week.

On Thursday night, Tottenham joined United in the race to sign the West Ham midfielder, who has a valuation of £85m on his head following his side’s relegation from the Premier League.

It has been previously reported that Fernandes’ preferred destination is Old Trafford, despite links to Real Madrid and the champions of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain.

West Ham need to generate funds from selling players – approximately £150m – and United have also been linked to Crysencio Summerville.

Teddy Sheringham verdict on West Ham star Mateus Fernandes

It was a disappointing season for West Ham, but that won’t stop bigger clubs from trying to take advantage of the Hammers’ status as a Championship club.

That will take some getting used to for West Ham fans, who have enjoyed visiting Premier League grounds regularly over the past 14 years.

Teddy Sheringham, who played for both United and West Ham, wasn’t impressed by Fernandes last season and believes the jury is still out for the 21-year-old.

“I wasn’t so impressed with Mateus Fernandes at West Ham this year,” Sheringham told ComeOn.

“A lot of West Ham fans think he’ll go on to bigger and better things, but the jury’s still out for me on Fernandes.”

If Fernandes moves to Old Trafford, United fans will hope it’s just a matter of Sheringham talking about a player he didn’t pay too much attention to.

For instance, we don’t even know how often Sheringham watches West Ham.

Tottenham already linked to Mateus Fernandes alternative

Tottenham were only linked with a move for Fernandes as of last night.

The Portuguese talent is the latest target set by Roberto De Zerbi, who wants to sign Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali.

A new report from TEAMtalk suggests Tottenham already have an alternative for Fernandes under consideration with Premier League experience.

That is Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who missed out on a place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup because Thomas Tuchel preferred Kobbie Mainoo.
