Ruben Amorim’s sacking is dominating the news agenda across football, after Manchester United wielded the axe.
A succession of underwhelming results was the backdrop for Ruben Amorim’s sacking, while his fallout with the board added accelerant onto the fire.
Amorim’s final press conference after the draw with Leeds prompted Ineos into action, leaving Manchester United fans stunned.
The issue over formations clearly unsettled Amorim, but I believe it was the currently open transfer window that tipped the situation over the edge.

Ineos unwilling to further back Amorim
The January transfer window is a difficult one for any club to do business in. But there are deals that can be done.
United In Focus financial expert Adam Williams broke down how United do have the function to spend substantially if they wish.
Williams explained: “Long story short: United could very comfortably spend £150-200m and increase the wage bill by £30-40m this January before worrying about the spending rules.”
This would of course have a knock-on effect for future transfer windows – but with a Champions League qualification place within reach, it could make sense to ‘speculate to accumulate’.
However, from a Manchester United perspective, the January 2026 transfer market looks completely dead.
United chose not to get into a salary war in the chase for Antoine Semenyo, conceding defeat to Manchester City.
Beyond that, there have been no serious transfer links for players in any positions.
This was clearly something that was needling at Ruben Amorim.
“Every department – the scouting department, the sport director – needs to do their job,” he said, during his unpredictable final press conference.
It was pretty evident that there was no strong push for any new signings.

Amorim wanted new players to come in and give his side a lift, while Ineos were not prepared to spend any more on the coach.
This appears to be an indictment of a lack of faith in Amorim from the board, and has brought the situation to boiling point.
With Amorim being asked about transfers in each and every press conference, his unhappiness was unclear.
Something also changed recently. Amorim switched his system for 90 minutes against Newcastle, and won the game.
He then reverted to his three-at-the-back system, and failed to win both games.
At that point, why would Ineos spend any more money on players to fit Amorim’s system, when the board were losing faith and insisting on change?
They could no longer in good faith spend on more players for Amorim’s system, and that was why he was ultimately fired.

Spending not expected under interim boss
Manchester United have actually had an interim boss in two recent January transfer windows.
One was with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2019, and the second was with Ralf Rangnick in 2022.
Both windows pre-dated Ineos, but it is noteworthy that the Glazers did not sanction any spending in either.
In both cases it was probably a mistake, with an opportunity missed to strengthen the squad and send a message that the club were not giving up on the season.
United are sixth in the Premier League and have a chance to achieve a Champions League place.
If Darren Fletcher starts playing a different style of football, will Ineos back him with players to suit it? We are doubtful, but it is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.
