United have presentable chance to end corner goal hoodoo vs Leeds

Manchester United are still yet to score a Premier League goal from a corner this season ahead of Sunday’s trip to face Leeds at Elland Road.

As per WhoScored, United have scored just two league goals from any set piece this season, which is the joint lowest in the division alongside Norwich.

That is an embarrassing record and it does not reflect well on set piece coach Eric Ramsay, who was brought in by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the summer.

For context, the top three sides in the Premier League – Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea – take up the top three positions in the list.

That hoodoo has to end soon and the clash with bitter rivals Leeds offers a presentable chance to do exactly that.

WhoScored’s numbers show that Leeds have conceded 11 goals from set pieces in the Premier League this season.

Only Crystal Palace and Leicester have a worse record than that and Marcelo Bielsa’s side were a soft touch from set pieces last season too.

That is a strange quirk for a manager like Marcelo Bielsa, who prides himself on his meticulous attention to detail in every area of the game.

That said, Southampton are next on the list of set piece goals conceded with ten and United were unable to take advantage of that at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United are currently unable to exert a great deal of control in games, with pretty much every game going right to the wire and becoming nervy.

Getting better at scoring set piece goals would allow United to break games open without playing especially well from open play, or killing games off without overcommitting.

United have scored eleven goals in two home league games against Leeds, and Bielsa’s side do leave space in behind to be exploited.

But the corresponding fixture at Elland Road last season was a drab 0-0, which could have been unlocked by a goal from a corner.

United have yet another opportunity to improve their corner goal record this weekend and they will not get many better chances between now and the end of the season.
