On the surface, an 18-year-old forward who wasn’t getting a look into the first team at Spurs isn’t getting first-team minutes at Old Trafford.
However, this is no ordinary teenage prospect. Tynan Thompson’s style of play is such that he can surprise a few people.

Tynan Thompson’s style of play
United went into this market with the intention of strengthening on the left wing, but a raw 18-year-old from the Spurs academy was nobody’s answer to that position.
Thompson played for the Spurs U18s side last season in a prolific campaign, with 22 goals and 12 assists in 55 games across various competitions.
He is a modern attacking winger who likes to start out wide on the left, from where he can cut inside and unleash shots from his stronger right foot.
One of the things that would have impressed Man Utd, however, is his two-footedness, because he is equally as capable of mixing it up and going outside to beat his man.
This makes him a nightmare to defend against, as he’ll just assist by getting to the byline like a traditional winger if he’s not allowed to cut inside.
Standing at 6’1″, he also has the raw tools to become an athletic asset, although his physicality needs some work.
Expect Man Utd to put him on a bulk-up plan, but not so much that it costs him his explosiveness.
A key thing that stands out when watching him is how he dribbles. He has a tendency to glide across the pitch with extreme close control.
He is not a tricky winger in the traditional sense, but his agility and close control make him a joy to watch. That is a skill better translated to senior football than just being a bag of tricks.
He will have to work on his defensive contribution, but that will come with time and coaching. There’s no better coach to bring him along than Michael Carrick, who did so with Morgan Rogers at Middlesbrough.

Thompson has that same rangy game, right foot, gliding dribbles, and explosiveness off a standing start, which made Rashford a handful.
Expect him to start with the Man Utd U21s to ease the transition, before some first-team minutes this season as United handle four competitions.
This is not a player signed to add depth to the academy teams. He’s the closest in the English youth circuit to Marcus Rashford.
By this time next year, he could age as United’s best signing of the 2026 summer window.
