Ruben Amorim cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines as Manchester United suffered defeat to Bournemouth.

It was an afternoon to forget for Manchester United as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Bournemouth won by that exact scoreline at Old Trafford this time last year in what is a pretty damning reflection of the lack of progress made by United over the past 12 months.

Ruben Amorim has called for patience as he implements his ideas at United, but performances in the last few weeks have proven that there is a lot of work to be done.

United fans were fuming at Joshua Zirkzee for his display against Bournemouth and Noussair Mazraoui had his worst game since joining in the summer. It was an extremely wasteful performance from United’s players, who were made to pay for mistakes once again.

Amorim felt his players were “nervous” against Bournemouth – something he has urged his squad to “fight” against.

• Manchester United had 2.26 xG (expected goals) compared to Bournemouth’s 1.24 xG – only 0.45xG came from Bournemouth’s open play.

• Manchester United missed four big chances against Bournemouth. The Red Devils have now missed 37 big chances in 17 Premier League matches while only scoring 21 goals.

• Manchester United took 23 shots against Bournemouth. This is the first time since April that United have taken 20+ shots in consecutive games against Premier League sides. Despite taking twice as many shots as Spurs and Bournemouth, United lost both games.

Amorim promised to defend United players while he was head coach and he stuck to that with his post-match comments.

There was nothing wrong with the way Amorim set up United on Sunday afternoon, yet he found his side on the end of a 3-0 defeat.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim urged his players to move on quickly from the defeat.

“It’s about working on the way we play. To focus on the job, not the moment, not what you feel in the stadium,” Amorim said.

“We tried to score but in the end, it was a tough match in a tough situation. We need to move on.”

United do have the chance to move on quickly, with another Premier League clash against Wolves approaching quickly on Boxing Day.
