Senne Lammens sacrificed a huge opportunity this season, but he’s a dynastic building block at Man Utd

Senne Lammens has become a key player for Man Utd this season, but he achieved that by sacrificing a huge opportunity.

Even the most optimistic expectations have been surpassed by Senne Lammens in his debut season at Manchester United.

From coming in as a low-cost gamble at a difficult position, Lammens has emerged as one of the leaders in the dressing room.

None of this could have happened had he made a different choice, one which could have seen him lift a major trophy today.

Senne Lammens was Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez replacement

Much has been written about how Lammens almost wasn’t a Man Utd player today, because Ruben Amorim wanted the experience and Premier League-provenness of Emi Martinez.

Had that materialised, United would have the Argentinian in goal today, while Senne Lammens would be playing for Aston Villa in the Europa League final.

Unai Emery won his fifth UEL title, beating Freiburg 3-0 in a one-sided final, and Lammens could look at that and think he could have had a European trophy in his debut season in England.

Instead, he wasn’t in any European competition, but it speaks volumes about his mentality that he chose a project with a high upside.

He joined a team whose floor had crashed completely, but the ceiling remained as high as ever.

Villa, in contrast, have been overachieving, and their wins always seem to come with a ticking clock about when it could end.

Lammens could immortalise himself at Man Utd

Lammens has already achieved at United what Villa have this season, which is Champions League qualification for next season.

What Paul Scholes said about Senne Lammens before he made his Man Utd debut

“What’s the price? 20 million Euros, that tells me he’s not a top goalkeeper.”

At Villa, he would have played under lesser pressure, but the accolades and profile that come with playing for Utd wouldn’t be there either.

If he plays a crucial part in guiding United back to the promised land, then his legacy at Old Trafford will be immortalised, which just wouldn’t be the case at Villa.

He has taken a major step this season towards the same by putting in sterling performances in a successful season for the club.

Instead of choosing a club that is at the top contextually, Lammens joined a sleeping giant. Waking it up as a potential building block of a dynasty will see him get immortalised.

It’s a bigger challenge, but the reward is equally, if not more, precious.
