Michael Carrick has named another Man Utd player besides Kobbie Mainoo who’s driving the club’s form, and he wasn’t wanted by Ruben Amorim either.
In the post-Ruben Amorim world, Kobbie Mainoo has become the poster boy for the Portuguese manager’s error of judgement.
That’s right, to an extent, but he’s not the only one powering Michael Carrick’s spell as Man Utd manager.
The interim coach credited another player not wanted by Amorim initially as someone who’s been a ‘big part’ of the positive results under his coaching.

Michael Carrick raves about Senne Lammens
The 0-0 draw against Sunderland will frustrate Michael Carrick, as United weren’t even at the races for much of the game.
However, the reason why United could even get a single point from the game was down to Senne Lammens, who was imperious in goal.
He repelled everything in sight, built up the play from the back without making errors, and commanded his box with confidence.
For once, no wonderstrike went past him to spoil his clean sheet, and Carrick raved about him after the game, noting that he’s a ‘big part’ of the results Man Utd have had under his coaching.
He said: “He’s been so solid and calm. He’s been a big part of the results we’ve had [this season].”
It is impossible to imagine this United XI without Lammens in it, but if Amorim had his way, he would be starting for a UCL qualification rival right now.
Ruben Amorim wanted Emi Martinez over Lammens
By the end of his time at Old Trafford, Amorim had come around on Lammens, but it can be argued that he had no choice in the matter.
How much is Senne Lammens worth now?
Man Utd got a real bargain… how much of a bargain?
Lammens’ debut was delayed as much as possible, and when Altay Bayindir gave him no choice, Amorim fielded the Belgian.
He has never looked back since, but it was clear that Amorim thought Lammens was nowhere near ready enough to be United’s No. 1.
It’s why he preferred to sign Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez for his experience, PL-provenness, and personality.
Coincidentally, Villa had identified Lammens as Martinez’s successor. So, had Ineos not looked out for the future of the club and ruled Amorim over Lammens, the Belgian would be powering Villa’s UCL charge.
Mainoo remains a more visible and high-profile mistake because Amorim never learned from it, but he almost cost United the chance to have Lammens as well.
