Manchester United have suffered since Ruben Amorim took charge, a storm the head coach promised would be weathered.

Since Ruben Amorim arrived at the club things have not gone swimmingly.

The struggles were expected by Amorim, as he warned after a brilliant 4-0 win over Everton in December.

Ineos set Amorim up for failure in the short term, appointing him weeks before the busiest period of the season.

Manchester United played a game every three days, with Amorim afforded next to no time on the training ground to work with his players or integrate youngsters for problem positions.

This has led to far from ideal players being utilised in the wing-back spots particularly and a worrying record being made.

Ruben Amorim’s record with full-backs at wing-back is appalling

Every fan knew it would take time for Amorim to implement his style and get the players playing in the manner he wanted.

So in the opening few months, it quickly became apparent that the wing-backs were in need of attention. Amorim’s wing-back roles are really more winger-backs, with a huge attacking emphasis placed on these roles.

So playing full-backs in these roles has led to poor attacking output with Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Tyrell Malacia all struggling to contribute effectively. While Amad Diallo has been the only player used to offer what Amorim wants.

The difference between a winger and full-back combo and two full-backs can be seen in the winning percentages.

This is because going over defensive puts the United defence under more duress and so it is quite clear the route Amorim must take going forward. It is therefore lucky that Ineos solved this issue in the transfer window.

Patrick Dorgu has solved this problem for Ruben Amorim

The arrival of Patrick Dorgu to Old Trafford could very well see this worrying record solved, as the Dane is in many ways a winger who has been playing as a full-back. So therefore wing-back should be perfect for the latest United recruit.

Dorgu will offer plenty going forward and has been compared by FBRef with elite wing-back Denzel Dumfries. This season has seen Dorgu create 2.50 shot-creating actions per 90 compared with Dalot’s 2.21 (bear in mind the quality difference between Lecce and United).

Additionally, Dorgu completes 2.83 progressive carries per 90 – compared to 1.52 per 90 from Dalot, which just shows briefly the impact United’s £25m player could have.

So assuming Dorgu comes in and is seen by Amorim as an instant starter, this move could be a game-changer and solve the big issue of United’s wing-backs, with Dalot, Mazraoui or Amad – in games against inferior opponents – starting on the right.

Amorim could even unleash and test this solution out on Friday against Leicester City in the FA Cup.
