Jack Fletcher continued the Fletcher legacy at Manchester United by earning a first-team debut against Aston Villa, and a shock decision by the club for him ended up getting vindicated.
Ruben Amorim finally rolled the dice on academy youngsters against Aston Villa, as Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey became debutants no. 255 and 256, respectively.
Both Lacey and Fletcher did well in tough circumstances and could be set for an increased role as the squad depth continues to get tested.
Who was the Man Utd man of the match in the defeat at Villa?
A positive performance despite the loss… who stood out for you?
It was a tricky outing for Fletcher, however, as he played a position that is not natural for him, but what he did despite that proves United planned it all along.

Jack Fletcher’s evolution was tested vs Aston Villa
Those who have seen Jack Fletcher come up through the academy know that the role he was asked to play against Villa is pretty far away from what he actually excels at.
This is the same player who had eight goals and seven assists in all competitions for United’s U21 and U18 sides last season in just 22 games.
He did all of that scoring and assisting from an advanced position, playing either as the No. 10 in a 4-2-3-1, or as an attack-minded central midfielder in a midfield-three.
His natural position is as the attacking midfielder, because he has a nose for the goal, because he has a knack for arriving late in the box and coming alive when the ball drops to him.
Against Villa, however, Fletcher came on to partner Lisandro Martinez in defensive midfield, a role that requires such a special and demanding skill set that Kobbie Mainoo was struggling to get into the team.
He had to curb his attacking instinct as he found himself defending on the left wing and getting into duels numerous times.
HAS Ruben Amorim proved concerns over his academy usage wrong after debuting Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey?🤔
These were his fourth and fifth academy debutants in 13 months…
The Jack Fletcher of one year ago was highly unsuited to that role, but, courtesy of a shock decision by United this season, this version of Fletcher knew exactly what he was doing.
Man Utd challenged Fletcher with a left-back role
Eyebrows were raised this season when United took Fletcher’s talents away from the goal and started deploying him at left-back.
He had some tough outings, but as the game against Villa showed, it was all in preparation to hone his defensive sense and positional intelligence.
Fletcher grew into that left-back role with time and eventually became comfortable, as a tough challenge forced him to grow the weaker parts of his game rapidly.
United’s decision, which was puzzling at the time, has now aged as a masterstroke, as Fletcher looks capable of putting in a shift as a No. 6 as well.
Amorim has stressed repeatedly that he doesn’t want to introduce youngsters in an XI where they struggle. Going by how the whole Fletcher experiment has evolved, he might be on to something.
