Ruben Amorim could rely on the Manchester United academy over the coming months with one player primed to step up.

While Manchester United’s first team are not in action until Sunday, Friday night saw the U18s in action for the FA Youth Cup quarter-final.

It was a clash against Arsenal at the Emirates which awaited Adam Lawrence, a harsh reward for United’s heroic 5-1 win over Chelsea in the fifth round. The tie was a blockbuster, even with Chido Obi missing the chance to break records against his former team.

There was some serious talent on the field and not only wearing the navy blue of United’s away shirt, as Arsenal’s Max Dowman proved his quality and will have Jason Wilcox wishing him to be the next Gunners youngster signed.

However, there was more quality on United’s side which resulted in Lawrence leading his side to a 3-2 win over Arsenal and into the semi-finals against either Aston Villa or Plymouth. During the game one player truly caught the eye.

Jack Fletcher the standout for Manchester United

It was a game as big as they come for the academy on Friday night and the record-setting U18s lived up to the billing in a closely contested battle with Arsenal.

United opened the scoring through Jack Fletcher as he scored a special goal before Lawrence’s side ended up 2-1 down. Goals from Jaydan Kamason and Bendito Mantato saw United complete a comeback to keep dreams alive.

There was more than one standout, but Fletcher was in top form as he dominated the centre of the park – giving Dowman a run for his money.

Fletcher scored the opening goal of the game and it was a special one. Fletcher was on the edge of the box where he cut inside on his weaker right foot before scoring into the top corner on the edge of the box.

It was an impressive goal which Fletcher made look easy, once again establishing why he is one of Carrington’s best and also that he is arguably too good for U18 football.

Fletcher’s goal comes 17 years after Darren Fletcher scored against Arsenal in the FA Cup, which is a nice moment for the pair. Now, after such an eye-catching performance, the question will be whether Ruben Amorim was watching.

Jack Fletcher is ready to step up for Ruben Amorim

This season has seen Fletcher not only star for the U18s but also the U21 side while is a regular in training for United’s senior side.

Fletcher has been dubbed “Cole Palmer in disguise” by Gabriele Biancheri in the past and it has been clear to see why after this performance from Fletcher.

Fletcher is so elegant on the ball and makes himself look levels above his opponents, which is a sign of a great player.

Fletcher was tipped to make his United debut as early as last year under Ten Hag, yet he still awaits this opportunity. With the situation United are in with just three senior options for three positions, it is time Amorim gave Fletcher his opportunity.

Perhaps the Europa League next Thursday will provide the golden chance Fletcher has been waiting for.
