Man Utd’s 7-1 win vs Roma was built on foundation Ineos have deprived Ruben Amorim of, it needs restoring

Arsenal recently defeated Dutch side PSV 7-1 in the Netherlands to set various records, and it was impossible not to be transported back to Man Utd’s 7-1 win vs Roma after seeing that score.

Back in the 2006/07, Man Utd were among the top dogs in the world but their quarterfinal against Roma hadn’t gotten off to the best of starts.

United had lost 2-1 in Rome, and in the first leg, the comeback kings of Europe had it all to do when the tie moved back to Old Trafford.

The stakes were high because Sir Alex Ferguson was without many of his regulars, but what followed was one of the most breathlessly intense attacking displays in Europe with Man Utd’s 7-1 win vs Roma, all built on a foundation Ineos have deprived Ruben Amorim of today!

Man Utd’s 7-1 win vs Roma driven by one factor

Firstly, before addressing anything else, it bears repeating that Sir Alex Ferguson was a genius who made the team into more than the sum of its parts.

One only needs to look at the circumstances surrounding the game to stress that fact. Alan Smith had recovered from a 14-month layoff and was thrown straight into the deep end.

The selection gamble by the then-Man Utd manager paid off immediately as Smith scored in the first 20 minutes. It was the first of three goals United scored within 20 minutes, which is where the foundation on which Man Utd’s 7-1 win vs Roma was built comes into play.

Old Trafford was bouncing that day, making it a cauldron for the visiting team and the atmosphere became progressively more electric.

It was in stark contrast to the sombre mood around Old Trafford as Ineos have taken an axe to the sentiments of the matchgoing fans with their decisions off the pitch.

In Man Utd’s 7-1 win vs Roma, a comeback was considered a formality, and Old Trafford knew their support wasn’t one-sided, the players would give back with their performances, something that can’t be said anymore.

Contrasting Sir Alex Ferguson and Ruben Amorim’s situation

The bouncing and electric Old Trafford is certainly a huge factor but ultimately, the responsibility of putting the ball in the net is that of the players.

That is where the contrast between Sir Alex Ferguson and Amorim grows stronger, with even more focus on the ownership.

Despite being without many regulars, the attacking options that day boasted the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, and more.

That stands in stark contrast to how Amorim will have to navigate the rest of this season, his attacking options limited to a struggling Rasmus Hojlund and Chido Obi, who has cumulatively played less than 90 senior minutes for Man Utd.

Amorim can definitely do much better but the position he’s been left to navigate is a thankless one. The culprits are the Glazers and to a lesser extent, Ineos.

Man Utd’s 7-1 win vs Roma doesn’t look like it will be repeated any time soon by another iteration of this club.
