Kobbie Mainoo was brilliant in midfield for Manchester United against Brentford, but outside of his on-field performance, he also did something impressive.
Victory over Brentford has moved Manchester United within touching distance of claiming a return to the Champions League, with Kobbie Mainoo playing a vital role.
Mainoo has been answering his critics in 2026, and his performance against the Bees has proven every criticism levelled towards him dead wrong.
Since his initial breakthrough, Mainoo has added combativeness to his game, a quality which Ruben Amorim clearly didn’t think he had, only to be proved wrong time after time.
But Mainoo also has a noticeable quality in character.
How would you rate Kobbie Mainoo’s performance vs Brentford out of 10 ???
Mainoo almost produced the assist of the season in the opening minutes…

Kobbie Mainoo showcases his leadership with Amad moment
Mainoo was one of United’s best players against Brentford, with his quality in defence standing out as he won duels and tackles while covering plenty of ground.
But the moment that stands out was his brilliant run in the first few minutes to set up Amad for a huge chance.
However, with practically an open goal, Amad’s shot was blocked, with many pondering how he missed, given the goal was gaping, and it went down as a big chance missed by the winger.
Amad’s lack of placement saw his strike directly at the Bournemouth defender instead of picking out the net, he should really have scored.
Mainoo was frustrated, looking at Amad in disbelief for a second before he changed his demeanour to instead comfort his teammate.
Amad has had a very poor season for United, scoring twice and is quite clearly struggling with confidence. Which wouldn’t be helped by teammates giving him grief.
Instead, Mainoo then comforted Amad, extending his hand to embrace his teammate, who looked stunned himself that he missed.
This moment shows Mainoo’s growing position as a leader in the team, with his actions showcasing that side of him.
Do Man Utd deserve more credit for being in third place?
Champions League football is almost guaranteed…
Diogo Dalot predicted Mainoo would captain Manchester United one day
Moments like this, at the age of 21, prove Mainoo has the natural leadership qualities which can be honed in the coming years as he settles into a position as a key player for United.
It also shows he has the quality that Diogo Dalot suggested last year. This saw Dalot name Mainoo as a future United captain, and for the first time, United fans have also seen this.
Mainoo is a brilliant player, but developing his ability to lead teammates and comfort them when needed will set him apart.
Luckily, Mainoo has had two perfect role models for this in Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.
Hopefully, this is the first of many moments of Mainoo leading in the coming years and perhaps one day he will take on the burden of donning the captain’s armband.
