I’ve been a lifelong Manchester United fan, and the news that Barcelona and England star Marcus Rashford is set to return is something that I can entertain.
I think the Marcus Rashford that will now be back at Old Trafford is no longer the same Manchester United player who was playing under Ruben Amorim.
Rashford’s spell at Barcelona, which is set to end this summer, has been a breath of fresh air for the 28-year-old Man Utd star after I saw him lift the La Liga trophy.
Despite Rashford’s strong spell at the Camp Nou, Fabrizio Romano reported on X on Wednesday that Barcelona will not trigger his permanent transfer clause.

Marcus Rashford evidently does not want to return to Man Utd – There is no way back for him surely?!

With Marcus Rashford coming back to Man Utd, all I want to see from the England and Barcelona star is for him to play for the team
I have been like many, many other Manchester United fans about my deep scepticism around Marcus Rashford after his time at Old Trafford soured things.
But when I watched Rashford at Barcelona, I saw a player who was ready to put his team first rather than playing for himself and feeling like he had to run the show.
It did feel that the former Aston Villa star became too big for his boots at United — and significantly underperformed as well outside of his best season at the club.
However, the Ruben Amorim era — as much as I would not want to think about that ever again — was a wake-up call for a potential re-evaluation of Rashford’s value.
I was an unwavering supporter of the 41-year-old former Manchester United manager, so much so that I was happy with him offloading Rashford.
I did not think that specific version of Rashford played for his team, but I think this one coming back from Barcelona could if he is really willing to show it again.
What’s YOUR message to Marcus Rashford after Barcelona’s deal for Anthony Gordon?
Should Man Utd use this reality check to try and bring Rashford back?
I think Marcus Rashford’s Man Utd return can only work with Michael Carrick in the Old Trafford dugout
Michael Carrick became the permanent Man Utd manager before the end of the 2025-26 campaign and his role makes a Rashford return to the club palatable.
I cannot rule out the idea of Rashford moving to another club well before we ever see him again in a Man Utd shirt for the 2026 pre-season summer tour.
But if he does return to Old Trafford from the 2026 World Cup, I think Michael Carrick is the only man who could really reintegrate him back into the squad.
United legend Carrick is all too familiar with Rashford, having played alongside him at Old Trafford and later coaching him under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign.
I watched Carrick leave the door open for Rashford during the 2025-26 campaign — and I was left wondering at the time if he foreshadowed this exact situation.
For me, at least, I think my only reason for being open to Rashford playing again for Man Utd is if the soon-to-be former Barcelona player has changed his attitude.
The ball is in Rashford’s court for what he does next, and I would welcome him back with open arms if he is ready to adopt a team-first ethos under Carrick.
