Wayne Rooney has now argued that Manchester United fans are one of a kind and their support is incomparable with any other fan base at a rival football club.

The 40-year-old Manchester United legend is all too familiar with the affection of Red Devils supporters after his remarkable playing career at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, a Europa League title, an FA Cup trophy and three League Cups with United.

The England icon also became Man Utd’s all-time leading scorer before he bowed out of the Premier League club in 2017 and returned to boyhood club Everton.

Wayne Rooney reveals what separates Man Utd fans from any other type of support in world football

Wayne Rooney, who has been out of management since 2024 after the end of his Plymouth Argyle spell, called it time on his magnificent playing career back in 2021.

The former Manchester United captain played both in England and abroad during his time as a player, with Rooney briefly spending his career at DC United in the MLS.

Speaking on his podcast, Rooney explained that fans play a “massive” role for their teams, even if some supporters do not realise their full influence in football.

The Premier League legend singled out United fans and insisted that Red Devils supporters show their true colours both during the high and low points in football.

“Yeah, and listen, the fans, I’m sure they do realise, but the impact the fans can have is massive in terms of getting behind the team and not just through the good moments, through the bad moments as well,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“And that’s where Man United fans, for me, are the best.

“You think I’d just say that, but I think that’s where the United fans are the best because they’re behind you when you win and you’re successful and you win trophies, but also when you’re going through a tough period, they’re still behind you and they’re with you, they’re standing right beside you in [those] tough moments.”
