Why Patrice Evra wants Michael Carrick as Man Utd’s next manager ahead of ‘amazing tactician or big name’

Patrice Evra has argued that there is no clear rival to Michael Carrick when it comes to appointing Manchester United’s next permanent manager this summer.

Ineos are on the hunt for the seventh permanent Manchester United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era amid the interim head coach reign of Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils have been without a permanent head coach since January after Man Utd finally axed Ruben Amorim from his role at Old Trafford during this season.

Ruben Amorim’s sacking as Man Utd manager paved the way for Carrick to succeed him in the short term until the end of the 2025-26 campaign at the Red Devils.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Patrice Evra hailed the transformative impact that former Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick has had at Old Trafford.

“We’ll have to start from zero again,” he said.

“I just feel like we’ll become like Chelsea, every year. And this is not United; we need consistency. Carra is doing miracles!”

United legend Evra insisted that the Red Devils must not overcomplicate the process and believes that Carrick is the best positioned to become Man Utd manager now.

The 44-year-old former United left-back also explained that the Red Devils have already tried their hand with established managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

“I don’t know why they think too much about the future,” Evra added.

“The present is Carra to get the top four spot. That’s the goal and I think we are in a good direction for that.

“We keep saying experience or whatever. We try with big names, with [Jose] Mourinho, with [Louis] Van Gaal, with Amorim.

“That’s why, for me, should Carra get the job? This is not the question of the day, of the moment.”

Patrice Evra praises the immediate impact that Michael Carrick made as Man Utd interim head coach

Carrick kicked off his reign in January and the Red Devils legend engineered a stunning 2-0 win for Man Utd against Manchester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Evra insisted that United’s performance against Manchester City in the Manchester derby blew him away with the immediate turnaround that Carrick sparked at the club.

“Carra is doing a good job, so let’s be behind him and then at the end of the season if he doesn’t qualify the team [for the Champions League], then I will understand if some people say we need a new manager,” he said.

“But I don’t know if it will work. Personally, I couldn’t believe the first game against [Manchester] City, the way we played, I was like, ‘Wow! All the players are passionate.’

“Even if you bring an amazing tactician or big name, it didn’t work in the past.

“Why don’t we have someone from the house? He knows the club, he’s really calm and he’s doing a good job.”

Carrick has managed eight wins from his 12 Premier League matches in charge since Amorim’s 14-month managerial reign at Old Trafford came to an end.
