Michael Carrick has opened up on a key dynamic from his Manchester United interim head coach reign after his permanent appointment at the club was made official.
The 44-year-old former Red Devils interim boss has become the seventh permanent Manchester United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era at Old Trafford.
Man Utd announced Carrick’s ascension to the Old Trafford hot seat on Friday ahead of the Red Devils’ final Premier League match of the 2025-26 campaign.
Carrick returned to the Red Devils back in January after Ineos made the call to sack former Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim as Man Utd manager.

Michael Carrick shares a behind-the-scenes look at his relationship with Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox at Man Utd
Michael Carrick has earned huge praise for his interim Manchester United head coach reign, including leading the Red Devils back to the Champions League.
Irrespective of the outcome of Sunday’s Premier League match against Brighton, United will now finish third in the table under permanent head coach Carrick.
Carrick insisted that he has maintained a “strong” relationship with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive officer Omar Berrada at the club.
Speaking on Man Utd’s Inside Carrington podcast, he told Wayne Rooney: “Right from the start, it’s been a really good place to come and work anyway.
“The atmosphere and where the building is and the relationships. I think it’s about relationships and building them with people and straight away there’s a wavelength, there’s an understanding.
“There’s the reality? Where do we want to get to? How does it look like? And I know I was initially here till the end of the season, but you’re kind of always part of those conversations of where you want to take the club and how it should look.
“So, they’ve been really open and listening and building a relationship as time goes on and gets to the stage now where we want to kick on and we want more and we want to make things better.
“So, I think that relationship’s crucial. If we haven’t got that relationship, then it filters down. So, that needs to be strong and it certainly is.”

Michael Carrick on the Man Utd transfer recruitment for the summer under Ineos figures Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox
Carrick insisted that his vision around Man Utd was always for the long term rather than the short term, with this summer’s recruitment always on the back of his mind.
“Yeah, I said it when I came in, [wasn’t] it? To be honest, I said I can’t come in and do this just with eyes on [an interim run],” he added.
“It might be the summer. Might be past the summer, it might not be. There’s no way I was just making decisions just for the short term.
“I think it was always a case of trying to make things better in the future. But it’s certainly been an element of planning from my side and eyes on what it could look like.
“So, it’s an important summer. I think that’s where we’ve got to and where we want to get to. We want to make a big step if we can. So, it’s an important summer.”
Carrick’s first match as Man Utd permanent manager will be against Premier League side Brighton at the Amex on Sunday afternoon.
