Wayne Rooney has made a prediction involving former side Manchester United ahead of the 2026-27 Premier League season under manager Michael Carrick.

Michael Carrick will lead the Red Devils into the new season as the permanent Manchester United manager after he succeeded Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Ineos made the 44-year-old Red Devils legends’ appointment permanent ahead of the final match of the 2025-26 Premier League season in May.

Carrick kicked off his reign as the permanent Red Devils head coach by leading Man Utd to a 3-0 win over Brighton in the Premier League clash at the Amex.

Wayne Rooney refuses to rule out Man Utd challenging for the Premier League title in the 2026-27 campaign

Manchester United legend Michael Carrick ensured that the Red Devils ended the 2025-26 campaign in third place in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils boss, who returned to Old Trafford back in January as interim head coach, also ensured United’s return to the Champions League for next season.

Wayne Rooney has now admitted that he could see the Premier League title race being “incessant” between four major teams, including Carrick’s United side.

Man Utd’s all-time scorer pointed to the fact that there is no clear “favourite” for the Premier League trophy due to the changing football landscape in English football.

“I think the title race next year will be really incessant because you’ve obviously got Chelsea, [a] new manager [at] Liverpool,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“Man City, obviously [a] new manager, United with Carrick coming in. So, there’s [sic] lots of good young managers in the league.

“So, I think the first time for a long time. There’s not an out-and-out favourite.”

Wayne Rooney points out exactly why Michael Carrick could lead Man Utd to a Premier League title challenge

Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to the Premier League title last season ahead of Manchester City, with the Gunners finishing seven points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s men.

However, Man City endured their own shock after Pep Guardiola bowed out of the Etihad after his decade-long managerial spell at Man Utd’s crosstown rivals.

Chelsea also brought in Xabi Alonso in the tail end of the 2025-26 campaign, while Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot in the Liverpool dugout this summer.

Carrick will enter his first full season as Man Utd boss and the stage is set for a major change in the status quo of the Premier League in a long time.
