Victor Lindelof’s Sweden held Spain to a goalless draw at Euro 2020.

Spain dominated possession with 85.1 per cent in total. But like a Louis van Gaal side they failed to show any real cutting edge.

Alvaro Morata wasted a good first half chance when he was one on one with the goalkeeper.

Manchester United star Lindelof played a key role as Sweden then closed the door on Spain and shut them out to secure a 0-0 draw.

Lindelof sent a message after the game celebrating his country’s ‘good start’.

With just 14.9 per cent possession, Lindelof’s Sweden had their work cut out to the point that goalkeeper Robin Olsen touched the ball more times than any of their players – 39 times in total.

Lindelof played his part, making nine clearances in total.

He also blocked two shots, made one interception and made three ball recoveries.

Lindelof was also reunited late on with his scourge of Gdansk, Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno, who got the better of him in Poland to score from a set piece.

This time at Euro 2020 Lindelof came out on top, although Moreno played just the last 14 minutes of the game plus stoppage time.

On the Spanish side David de Gea was on the bench with Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon preferred, as he was in recent World Cup qualifiers.

Sweden face Slovakia up next who beat Poland 2-1 in the other group game.

A draw against Spain will give Sweden confidence and they should give a better account of themselves in their next game. They will see more of the ball that is for sure.

Spain must go back to the drawing board and try to figure out a way to be more direct when they face Poland next up.
