Three reasons Manchester United won’t sign Tyrone Mings

ESPN have reported the names on Manchester United’s central defensive shortlist for the summer.

Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Braga’s David Carmo all feature.

But the other name stands out and has already caused a stir on social media – Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings.

Of course, the report just features a shortlist of names and isn’t claiming United will be snapping up Mings tomorrow.

It’s not the first time his name has been mentioned in relation to United. An ESPN report from July claimed he was on the radar.

And we’ve got three reasons why Mings won’t be coming to United in the months ahead.

Backup option

The whole point of a shortlist is it contains your top targets as well as a contingency plan if you can’t get them.

Looking at the names on the list, it appears Varane would be the ultimate signing, with Kounde a realistic alternative.

Then Carmo is the young wildcard and Dayot Upamecano is also mentioned – although it appears Bayern Munich have stolen a march in that particular race.

It would be a surprise if Mings was ahead of any of that quartet in United’s plans.

Of course, we all know Ed Woodward’s track record in the transfer market. He may well fail to provide Solskjaer with his top target.

But there are a few options to work through before Mings comes onto the horizon.

English tax

The market for homegrown players is inflated and everyone knows it.

Villa arguably paid English tax themselves when buying Mings from Bournemouth in July 2019 – a deal which could be worth up to £26.5 million, as per the Guardian.

Take into account Villa’s stable financial situation and successful season so far, and the pricetag could easily spiral out of control for Mings.

In the middle of a pandemic, it seems unlikely United would spend silly money on Mings.

Villa demanded a hefty fee for Jack Grealish and Mings is just as an important part of their side.

Previous with United

Back in March 2017, Mings was banned for five games for stamping on Zlatan Ibrahimovic during a 1-1 draw with United.

It was an unsavoury incident which wouldn’t exactly lead him to receive a warm welcome if he did move to Old Trafford.

And as recently as last month, he was moaning about the offside law after a game against Manchester City when his mistake cost his side the opening goal.

A series of sarcastic tweets about a rule which had been in place for years was a bit small-time, in truth.

It seems unlikely those two episodes would make Ole Gunnar Solskjaer more inclined to sign him.
