Three reasons Manchester United must not move for Sergio Aguero

The announcement Sergio Aguero will leave Manchester City made headlines around the world this week. It seemed inevitable, and yet, it was still the end of an era.

It meant United fans had to endure more replays of ‘that goal’ from 2012 on news channels all over again, and it has sparked some odd rumours.

Being international week, a report from French website Footmercato alleges United have made an offer to try and sign Aguero. This was subsequently picked up by the BBC’s Gossip column.

A move seems unlikely, and yet, because this talk generates such big headlines, it’s really important to spell out, ‘we don’t want Sergio Aguero at Manchester United’.

10 years ago, yes. It could have saved a lot of heartache. But not now, in 2021. Here is a look at three reasons why we don’t want to see United move for Aguero this summer, even for free.

He’s Sergio Aguero

With the greatest respect to the Argentine, the simple reason we don’t want to sign Sergio Aguero, is because he is Sergio Aguero.

His title winning goal in 2012 is best left in the past. We don’t want a constant reminder of it every time United play.

Whatever Aguero could achieve at United, it would pale in significance to that moment, barring a long shot Champions League win.

Aguero is an individual who has never courted controversy, or tried to wind United fans up, and generates a lot of respect. But even with this in mind, he’s not a player we want to see wearing red.

It might wind up a few City fans, but it won’t take away that fateful moment nine years ago.

He’s too old and injury prone

Aguero turns 33 in June. That’s the same age Edinson Cavani was when he joined United last summer.

United ignored worries about Cavani’s injury hit last season at PSG, and the problems have come back to haunt us, with the Uruguayan missing key games this season, and starting only nine league matches.

Aguero’s injury hit season has seen him start just four league games this season.

United need a younger striker, or we might as well just renew Cavani’s contract.

Lack of vision

City are releasing Aguero for a reason. They believe his best days are behind him, and a fresher, more reliable frontman is needed.

They are the team we need to catch, and United won’t overhaul them by signing a player they consider no longer to be a valuable asset.

City will no doubt be signing a top level forward to replace Aguero, and this is the type of player United need.

A move for Aguero would typify what has been wrong at United under Ed Woodward’s tenure, a headline-grabbing move right out of the Bastian Schweinsteiger mould, for a player past his peak.

Under new director of football John Murtough, United have a chance for a fresh start, so let’s take it.
