Exploring the accomplishments of Manchester United’s newest signing Tynan Thompson.

Manchester United confirmed the signing of Tottenham prospect Tynan Thompson, paying £4 million for his signature.

United could have to pay a further £4 million in add-ons, which will clearly be worthwhile if he plays enough to trigger the relevant clauses.

Thompson aims to become one of the world’s best wingers. United In Focus has taken a look at his style of play and his strengths and weaknesses.

United may have signed the 18-year-old at just the right time in his career. This is a player who could easily be worth 10 times the initial fee paid for him if he can establish a role in the first team.

To get to this point, there is a Manchester United connection that has helped Thompson in his career so far.

Neil Ryan handed Thompson his England under-18s debut

Tynan Thompson was called up into the England under-18s squad for the first time in 2025. He had never been capped at international level before.

The coach who called Thompson up was former Manchester United youth coach Neil Ryan.

Ryan spent 19 years working with United before leaving in 2022, having overseen various academy levels below the first team group from under-11s to under-21s.

Now working with the FA, Ryan was the coach who handed Thompson the first of his seven under-18s caps.

Ryan was manager of five of those seven games, before taking up a role with England’s under-20s. Thompson provided his first England assist under Ryan, in a 3-2 win over Canada.

Another new academy signing, goalkeeper Charlie Hardy, was also handed his England under-16s debut under Neil Ryan.

Man Utd players Tylan Thompson has already played with

With the under-18s Premier League split by north and south, Tylan Thompson is not so familiar as an opponent to his new Manchester United teammates.

However, he does know a handful of the club’s academy players as teammates from England youth level.

Below is a list of Manchester United academy players who Tylan Thompson has already played or trained alongside.

Thompson made Tottenham first team squad

Tynan Thompson is yet to make his professional debut, although did get a feel for the first team squad at Tottenham last season.

Thompson was named on the first team bench three times in matchday squads under Thomas Frank, including in two Champions League fixtures.

He was an unnamed substitute in ties against Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund. Thompson also made the bench for their Carabao Cup tie against Doncaster last season too.
