Solskjaer reacts to Manchester United defeat

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already looking ahead to next Tuesday’s game against Fulham, when fans are expected to return to Old Trafford for the first time since March 2020.

Following the 4-2 loss against Liverpool, the manager spoke to Sky Sports and said he had been waiting ‘a long time’ to see the fans back at the Theatre of Dreams.

United take on an already relegated Fulham side next Tuesday at 6pm and could confirm a second place finish with three points.

“I expect Tuesday to be a good one,” said Ole. “The games that came here together here, in five days and three league games. It’s not been ideal.

“Hopefully when we can let the fans in on Tuesday it’ll be a good atmosphere here.

“We’ve been waiting for a long, long time to let them in so it’s about time we enjoy a game together.”

Ole disappointed with goals conceded

Manchester United gave one of their worst defensive displays in recent memory, with all four goals entirely preventable.

Ole believes United gifted Liverpool at least three of the goals, with two coming from poorly defended set-pieces.

Ole said: “We gave them three goals really, at least two of them we gave and when we scored again we got momentum we had a massive double chance, key moments went against us.

“We created our own…downfall because the second goal we’d probably expect no foul there because it’s not really a foul, but the referee probably gives a foul because Bruno’s up there [injured].

“It’s a bad moment to concede a goal in, just before halftime, and the start of the second half was really poor.

United miss Harry Maguire

United captain Harry Maguire was seen on crutches and in a boot in the stands, making a return to the side before the season ends extremely unlikely.

It left Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly to man the centre of defence tonight which they have not done many times together before.

It is not totally unreasonable to say that had Maguire been in the side tonight, fewer goals would have been conceded.

But Ole was quick to back his replacement defenders, saying they should be able to cope without the captain.

“Harry’s been very important for us and really good,” said Ole. “He’s been absolutely top since he came to the club so of course we’re going to miss him.

“But he’s out so we’ve got to deal with that we got good enough players to be able to deal with it.

“Now it’s about regrouping and starting to build our confidence again because we have two league games and a final.”
